Jeff,

Why did you use low power only? Don't you feel you spent too much of that minute on the first sketch? The second and third sketches show the dust storm better.

Frank

Years ago we wouild sent ALPO a dust storm observational report on April 1 in Mars date! It would catch people off guard Once I sent in one with a long grey cloud from Nix Olympica as though it had erupted

Jeff,

That is pretty funny.
I think most folks forget about April 1st each year.

It was actually July 13, 2001 when a strange out of season dust storm blew up. Still evaluating that one!

Jeff,

Just saw this--you'll be happy to know that for a split second you had me going.

2001 was the first apparition I observed. Imagine my disappointment when Mars disappeared under that huge dust storm.
The 2003 apparition made up for it, though.

We used to be a fun group at the old ALPO Mars digs. That dust storm was not scheduled to say the least and came way too early for the "normal" dusty season. We are still trying to figure that one in the scheme of things.

My first real serious Mars observing was in 1973 and the "next to largest" dust storm blew up! I almost gave up on the Red Planet when all that was visible was an orange ball Mars always seems to surprise us, huh?
