LXD55 vs. CG5 new
      #3591 - 06/20/03 11:37 AM

Could someone make a comparison between these two mounts?

Shall I hold out for Celestron's new CG5 Goto? or just settle with LXD55 with Autostar and upgrade the hardware via disassembling and cleaning/polishing/regreasing and hope that it would perform better?

Joon

I can't comment on the CG5. It might be very well be better than the LXD55.

Funny you should mention the hardware upgrade on the Meade mount. I just finished re-assembling my mount. I did not remove the RA or Dec. bearings or gear sets. I didn't go that far, but I did remove the motors, reset the gears, loc-tite'd them, and set the backlash (removed it actually) from both gear boxes and lubed it lightly.

There is much maintenance that the end user can perform on these mounts...Meade just doesn't tell you that, nor do they provide exploded views or instructions.

If you are mechanically inclined, it's not hard at all.

I'd like to get the upgraded set of internals that a website is offering, but I'm holding off for some other stuff.

Joon, I think I talk a little about the (standard) CG5 vs the LXD55 in my review under the mounts section.

Basically, I thought the fit and finish on the two were pretty comparable, with the LXD55 pulling ahead - but that may not be fair to my cg5, as I got it off astromart.

My only qualms about the lxd55 are the QC. I think that Celestron will probably do a better job of that, and there fore will probably have a better out of the box mount.

I saw the Celestron CG5 goto at NEAF but didn't get to play with it. The two things it has going for it are the tripod (the same as the EQ-6; about four notches above the LXD55 tripod) and a guiding port for imaging. I still like the Autostar controller better.

That tripod was very solid and stable with the much heavier EQ-6 mount, a 10" SCT, a 4" APO, and 50 pounds of counterweights. It would be a terrific upgrade for an LXD55 if any turn up naked.

Thanks John for your reply.

I've placed an order for C8-SGT and the $99 eyepiece deal from Woodland Hills last week. I also, just received an email from Celestron saying that they will start shipping C8-SGT's out in 10 days on a first come first served basis.

hehehehe... can't wait for the scope to arrive.
