Mars 15 april 2010
      #3748763 - 04/16/10 01:32 PM Attachment (49 downloads)

I tried this week three times to see anything on Mars with my 12" dobson. Without any result Is there something with my eyes or telescope? But Frank, Dweller, Uwe and Kris had some nice results on the "little" Mars. So I blamed the seeing.
Yesterday I finaly had a good view of the red planet. I was surpriced with the amount of detail and asked the question: "why I haven't see more when Mars was almost twice the diameter?".
The norht polarcap was very small and difficult to see compared with my last observation a month ago (a blue filter helped). The best view was with a yellow filter: Mare Eryhtraeum was most prominent. Mare Acidalium/Niliacus Lacus made a sharp distinction with the lighter Tempe. At the west (middle left) was another lighter region (Eden?).
The sketch was done with pastel pencils and a new toy that worked very well for blending: a rubber shaper . The black surrounding was done with a black permanent marker.

15/4/2010, 21.40 UT, 12" dobson + apodizing mask @ x300, yellow and blue filter, CM 35°, diam. 8.2", alt. 45°

Jef,

This is a very fine sketch. You have captured much more than I did earlier this week. Color and albedo features are A+.
As Mars shrinks we really needs good seeing. The last two nights for me although clear were too disturbed to see any details on the 3 overlapping dancing images of Mars in my scope. That rubber shaper really seems to work well. I'll need to check it out further.

Frank

Jef, great drawing.

Try again tonight (16th), the weather is coming from the North, seeing may be good.

I will be going out but have already had half a bottle of wine !!!!

PS - try to observe in twilight - it helps.

good sketch Jef, i saw the polar cap as very small too!

that should spur you on to start observing mars earlier next summer/autumn 2011

there's absolutely nothing wrong with your eyes, i've had 2 brief looks at mars the last weeks, with bad seeing, but i couldn't make out anything as well in my 12". i could see a little bit this evening though.

Jef,

An excellent observation of Mars at a small angular diameter (8.2"). You were able to record a few albedo features as noted in my labels. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Everybody, thanks for the kind words.

@ Dweller: I hope it was red wine

@ Frank: Thanks for the labeling and the nice black background. So I was right about Eden.

Jef, it was a French Chardonnay

I looked at Mars on the evening of the 16th and seeing was terrible - maybe the volcanic ash ??? I did not bother to do a drawing of either Mars or Saturn. So you got a good result

Lynn, Thanks.
I first gave up Mars as well. But give it a try (when Syrtis Major is on the view). It will train you for the next opposition.
