Saturn and 4 moons 03/21/10
      #3752835 - 04/18/10 06:51 PM Attachment (68 downloads)

Satun at opposition (03/21/10) and rings at 3 degree tilt. Could easily see 4 moons,... from left to right, Tethys, Titan, Dione, and Rhea. I did not notice Hyperion. This is the first time I ever noticed any of Saturn's moons. Tried colored filters, deep yellow, orange, red, and blue and none added any details of belts and zones. Also viewed Saturn with 5 mm eye piece and say no additional details using less magifacation. It was cool to see 4 moons! This sketch was made viewing Saturn with my Orion XT12i and 3.5 mm eye piece (428x) in Elizabeth Colorado where the seeing is not very steady.

Bob,

Very nice sketch. I always like to see those moons with the gas giants. Well done.

Frank

Bob,

An very nice observation of Saturn and some of it's satellites. You may want to use one of the Saturn templates provided by the BAA Saturn Section based upon the current tilt of the rings (I have provided links to templates between 2-5 degrees which will work until October, 2010). I look forward to your future observations.

The tilt (B) of Saturn's rings may be obtained from software such as WinJupos by Grischa Hahn ( http://www.grischa-hahn.homepage.t-online.de/astro/winjupos/index.htm )

Have fun observing Saturn!

Carlos

Bob,

Very realistic sketch of Saturn through the EP. Nicely done, I enjoy viewing it. I hope to see more of your efforts.

Bob
Fine sketch of Saturn. I hope you once can see the planet with better seeing, because there is more detail visible in a 12" than your observing. You can look at the sketches on this forum to see what is possible.

Thanks for everyone's warm responses.
I had trouble getting details out of Mars too.
Currently I do not have a fan mounted to cool my mirror down and I need to do that. Hopefully that will make a big difference!

Hello Bob, great sketch.

I also fitted a fan to my Newtonian and the difference was astounding. I always thought the softy image I saw was due to the UK skies. The fan gives me a very sharp image now.
