The night before last I got a little time with the MC. There was a crescent moon out so I didn't expect much and was mainly planning on doing some work with the telescope and computer interface. I hit some galaxy targets in Leo, like NGC 2903. It was like there was no moon out! (I'm running an IDAS LP filter on the Hyperstar). I moved on to some really dinky, obscure galaxies like NGC2917, something like 13th magnitude. I finished up the night hitting one that was 14.8 magnitude with about 25 second hyper2 integrations. The very best I've been able to do visually under good, no moon skies is about 13th magnitude. Stephan's Quintet, at best, is just on the edge of visibility with the LP around here. And here I am looking at 14+ magnitude galaxies like it was a dark site and no moon.... in my LP backyard? Wow.
I have the two volume series, "The Night Sky". There are many black and white images of the galaxies I was looking at. The images are older, using hypered film so I'm guessing they're taken sometime in the 1980's or so. Most were with 16 inch telescopes. The thing that was incredible is my TV image looked identical to the photos in the book. The difference was my exposure times was at the longest 25 seconds and the photo images were 75 minutes. It's amazing how the technology has change in 25 years.

The Mallincam is truly an amazing piece of technology. Not only does it help in light polluted areas, but it is also wonderful for those of us whose aging eyesight is beginning to limit the detail we can see just visually without the help of the camera! Hope you and your wife continue to have many enjoyable evenings using your camera.

Yes...it certainly has revived my (formerly) waning interest in observing. Now I'm out every new moon weekend (or sometimes WITH the moon).
I noted last weekend, as we were attempting to broadcast, that, with the 28" scope, even the small crescent moon was casting enough light on the moisture and particulates in the air to create a skyglow that diminished contrast and showed as red-noise on the monitor.
Also found out that even an 'early' moon projects enough light THROUGH the scope's cloth shroud to negatively affect the images. THAT'S how sensitive the Mallincam is!!!
