Thanks Jay. Sketching is new to me, so I especially appreciate the encouragement.

PJ,

Nice work. Is this an inverted sketch or is it white on black?

Frank

You've done a terrific job on that sketch, PJ! Have you tried sketching on black paper yet for H-alpha? It really helps reduce glare from the sun so that your eyes don't have to adjust so much again once you look through the eyepiece again after making your markings.

Thank you Erika. I have not tried black paper yet, actually don't know much about it. Still learning a lot. As I hopefully improve, I'll try experimenting with it. Any suggestions on brand/type of paper you feel works best?

I like the black Strathmore Artagain paper or black Cansen paper for h-alpha. You can buy the pads of black Artagain from Dick Blicks online. At Hobby Lobby, I can buy Artagain, but not a pad full of nothing but black. It's got the perfect tooth on it for a faint mottled solar disk.

I use a combination of supplies for adding the features.

White Conte' crayon on it's side for filling in the disk.
White Conte' softer pencil for the brightest areas of the proms or plage.
White watercolor pencils for the faintest areas of the proms.
Black charcoal for the darker shading around the filaments or plage.
Black wax pencil for the sunspots and darkest areas of the filaments.

To get started, I would just recommend the Artagain paper and the Conte' or watercolor pencils. I have a feeling you'd really like that over the white paper. :-)
