Exciting News about Faces of Mars compilation :) new
      #3752712 - 04/18/10 05:44 PM

All,

Fellow sketching forum member Frank5817 (Frank McCabe) was kind enough to supply me with a contact at the British Astronomical Association (BAA). Dr. Richard McKim there (Mars Section Director) is interested in our compiled Faces of Mars sketch!!! So they would like to keep and use our sketch

I will PM you all seperately so I have the confirming messages, and will be asking you for permission to give the BAA our composit sketch. Before they will accept it though it will need to be modified to show everyones real name, and the city and country where they reside. So the message reply will have to have that info also, otherwise I will have to remove your sketch from the composit for BAA. I have already compiled the list of scopes you all used and type (see below and let me know if any errors).

Dr McKim also stated that the BAA would also like very much to have other sketches people have done for their archive, so more of Mars, plus Venus and Mercury would be appreciated. I will let you know shortly how to send them other works. Anyway, exciting news

Hey...it was all of your sketches that inspired me to view Mars more this opposition and to give sketching a try. This is by all means a group effort. Will be nice to have all the good work each of us has done for the 2010 opposition become a part of the archives of such a time honored astronomical organization!

Bill,

That is excellent news about the outstanding Mars compilation that you put together from all of the wonderful Mars observations made by observers on this forum. Dr. McKim is well respected astronomer that has much knowledge of the red planet. I have been sending him my Mars observations for many years now. I also think it is a good idea to send Dr. McKim (BAA Mars Section) all of our Mars observations in the future. All observations are greatly appreciated by Dr. McKim. Thank you once again for putting together the Mars compilation.

Let me put in a plug here for Dr. McKim's "Catalog of Martian Dust Storms", a very interesting and useful book, available from the BAA at a very reasonable price.

(BillP: "Catiotropic" is actually "Catadioptric". Sorry to be anal, but you *are* submitting it to the BAA...)

Bill

Congratulations! That's wonderful news. I'm sure I can speak for all of us here at CN, and that we must thank you for all your efforts in putting this together for all of the sketchers that contributed.

I just received your post on this so I apologize if I am late to get to my personal messages. I approve of all this of course. Also, just for the record, I noticed that you recorded my observation as with a 127mm Catadioptric. I had used both a 10.1" f/4.5 Coulter Odyssey Dobsonian [purchased new in 1987] and I had also made some quick observations with a Celestron Nexstar 5i Catadioptric, but I think my better observational efforts were observed through the 10.1" Dobsonian.

I was pleased to also see that the BAA has made studies about Martian dust storms, as that became the theme in the lower artisíts conception of my sketch. There was a large dust storm occurring over the Martian polar region at the time I made my sketch, but of course I did not actually observe it through my modestly limited 10.1Ē Dobsonian.

I'll look forward to seeing our sketch news in the BAA publications.

Thanks again,

Mark

Bill, I saw on ASOD that France had followed the example. Maybe you can make a compilation of the compilations

Bill and all

Yes, it is true that life imitates art. And to champion Jef's idea; but I think it could also be taken to extremes; the economic laws of diminishing returns. We'll produce more images in our forums or fight!

It conjures up memories of my art classes in high school. I was kind of a reclusive quiet artist. Never hardly said a word [if you can believe that today] but as soon as I did something on paper or the canvas, everyone in the art class was copying me. I learned much later that the greatest thing we can do in life is to positively influence others; in effect, to teach one-another to aspire to greater heights. I think the compilation by Serge Vieillard for the French sketchers is a fine effort.

Congratulations Bill, as your example of us at Cloudy Nights has obviously been well received around the world and has inspired many others. And that foreground idea that the French added of the Martian landscape below? . . . I wonder where they got that idea.

Iíll look forward to seeing what develops from here. Is Saturn possibly next? Excuse my naivety but have you considered forwarding the Faces of Mars Compilation Sketch to Sky & Telescope and/or the many Astronomy magazines? Just another thought for further publication to spread the science and art.

Thanks again for setting this great precedent,

Mark

I am sure that was probably NUNKY who gave them the idea. He is here only semi-often, and only speaks French I believe. One of his sketches is in ours. I had to track him down on the French sites to get his permission (thank goodness for Google translator and some help from others here). We ended up emailing a bit. I know he wanted to have our pic put on several French sites but wanted to wait til the BAA responded before I sent out all the permission requests again. There seemed to be lots of sketchers on the French forum so looks like it was easier and quicker than waiting for ours. Good thing though...very artful arrangement they did. Looks like this latest Mars oppostion has done some good around the world huh

Anything that brings us together in peace is good for all of humanity, even a common interest in sketching as a way of celebrating life.
