Season 2009 - 2010 sketching summary
      #3760598 - 04/22/10 05:23 AM

The season here is over so I made some interesting and less interesting statistics for show. The one thing that never stops to amaze me is that no matter what, every fifth night is clear (at least an hour of clear skies).

Sky conditions:

Out of 240 days 52 (22%) were clear
Session interrupted by clouds: 12 (23%)
Session plagued by the moon: 16 (30%)
Worst NE lim.mag recorded 4.6 (SQM-L 17.13)
Best NE lim.mag recorded 7.4 (SQM-L 21.33)

Objects sketched:

Messier objects: 15 (14,6%)
NGC objects: 52 (50,5%)
IC objects: 10 (9,7%)
Other objects: 26 (25,2%)
Total: 103

Sketches by aperture:

Naked eye: 1 (1,0%)
2" Galileoscope: 1 (1,0%)
4.3" Tal-1: 6 (5,8%)
4.7" Sky-Watcher: 39 (37,9%)
8" Orion DSE: 56 (54,4%)

Objects observed:

New objects observed: 17
New constellation "sweeps" completed: 2 (Corona Borealis & Lynx)
Faintest object observed: NGC 5974 (14.0 (v) mag)
The most annoying object observed: Sextans A (UGCA 205)
The most disappointing object observed: suburban M51
The most impressive object observed: PK 164+31.1 / Jones-Emberson 1

Observing sites used:

NE lim.mag 4.8 - 6.0 = 41 times
NE lim.mag 6.5 - 7.0 = 10 times
NE lim.mag 6.8 - 7.6 = 1 time

Observing conditions:

Lowest temperature recorded: -24C (-12F)
Highest temperature recorded: +12C (54F)
Lowest humidity recorded: 58%
Highest humidity recorded: 99%

Jake,

That is a fantastic season and what a great idea to track the statistics like that. I need to "borrow" that idea. My lowest temp this winter for observing was -10 degrees F (right after a storm). I've had far more cloudy nights than last year but would need to go count them up again.

PK 164+31.1 / Jones-Emberson 1, that's rather cool.

What was annoying with Sextans A (UGCA 205)?

Jake,

I am glad that you enjoyed a very good observing season. It looks like a very productive one. The forum benefited from your excellent observations posted. Thank you for sharing them with us all once again.

Carlos

Jake, do you have a record of how many hours you spent with a telescope?

Jake,

A very useful list of statistics. A great idea for all deep sky observers.

Frank

Sadly not an accurate number my friend. I wrote to my blog:

"Once more the deep sky observing season in Finland is over. It has indeed been quite a drop from the early years with 400-500 sketches / year. Considering the fact that I spent probably less than 100 hours observing this year, it is good enough an achievement."

I spent most of the observing time under dark skies to look for the objects in my column so that reduced my sketching time quite a bit this year

/Jake
