Alm
Another poster mentioned cleaning the mirror of a Newt scope. They live near the ocean, and after observing, the mirror has a salt film on it. They clean it buy pouring distilled water on it and blow drying it with a squeeze bulb.
Any other recomendations?
I plan on going to the ocean and want to take my Nighthawk.
How would you recomend cleaning the lense for this scope.
Thanks Keith

Keith, Just wash the whole OTA in Salt Water, let it dry, and then scrub the remaining salt off of the objective with 60 grit sandpaper.

Doesn't everybody use that method?
I always wondered why other people's scopes worked better than mine.

You and me both Tom.
I spent the better portion of 2 hrs cleaning the doublet in the one given to me.. I still think it could be done better tho, but it's 100%better then what it was.

Sorry Tom, I am not smart enough to give you a "real" answer - at least not one that wouldn't actually damage the scope.
The best I have heard is to use dry air to remove the majority of the dust, and then a "lens pen" for actual cleaning. I have read that unless the scope's objective is really bad, don't clean it.
AlM or another optics guru can answer better than I can. I have no idea what salt would do to coatings.

I forgot to use my magic smiley in my post...so I'll use two now (just in case!)
Personally, I would love to have AJ's problem. I go to St. Aug. every time I go to FL (my brother lives in JAX, as do my wife's sisters, her folks are in the Orlando area and my folks are in the right part of FL - the panhandle!)

Hi, Cleaning optics to often is the greatest cause of damage. Salt spray can be very damaging. When the dew forms on the optics it will dissolve much of the salt and other materials. Upon drying ut will leave behind a fine residue.
Coatings are crystalline in structure and residue may become locked into that structure upon drying.
I avoid dew forming on my optics. I place booties over the dew cap and part-way down the tube. This prevents excessive cooling, which leads to dewing.
Before bringiing the scope in, I cover and seal with plastics bags and then bring it in. Do not bring the optics in unsealed. The higher moisture content of the indoors may surely form on the cold lenses.

Hi, I don't observe in dusty areas or where salt spray is present.
Most of your cleaning should only involve blowing dust off.
For a minor smudge or finger print, I just lightly blow and fog the area and carefully wipe it off with Q-Tips.

Hi Keith, That looks great! Nice color too!
You'll like the effect and its so simple. So you have the white. Now all you need is an EQ6!

AlM;
Ok I'll give it a try. Stole one of my wife's leg warmers. Thanks for the hint.
Did you get the PM's I sent you?
