It has been awhile since Ed Ting posted a shoot out review. He is joined by two club members you may remember if you were a reader in the old days Chase M. and Old Dan for a show down between two 6" Achros, the Explore Scientific AR152 152mm f6.5 and the Astro Telescopes A1522 152mm f/5.9.

Ed's reviews and website have gotten me thru many a tought day. I think he and Phil Harrington also bring a lot of personality and humor to the hobby.

Hey, more people looking through telescopes is always a plus for the hobby. Don't be an old stick in the mud.

Ed's reviews are fun to read and very informative. I'm glad he's started them back up.

It's strange how even a good review from a good reviewer can be misleading.

Assuming what he says about these scope is true (an excellent assumption), then why not skip the shorties and go straight to the 6" f/8 offered by e.g. Astrozap, Meade, ...? The performance will be proportionally better and one will lose nothing in wide-field observing with the right eyepiece.

But, it's good to see achromats getting good press.

The f/8 would be longer and less portable?
I'd be interested to know how the color correction/sharpness of the AstroTelescopes 6" f/5.9 holds up against an Astrozap/Meade 6" f/8. Especially since the 6" f/5.9 outperforms the f/6.5.

BTW, the 6" f/5.9 is made by Kunming United.
The 6" f/6.5 (and f/8) are made by Jinghua.

(P.s., it's excellent to see Ed Ting reviewing again! )

Interesting as there were no star testing impressions.

"Don't look at Sirius." - I love that line

Actually my 6" f/8 (since sold) split Sirius like a ripe blue melon.

That is one of the reasons I went back to a 6" f/6.5 after the Astrozap 6" f/8. A bit easier on the Celestron AS CG-5 mount, and a bit more comfortable observing positions.

The optical coatings on the ES is also better than previous 6" refractors I've owned, including the Astrozap. The focuser is also far better than the previous 6" refractors (Skywatcher, Meade,, Antares, and Astrozap)

Optically this particular ES 6" f/6.5 is a bit better than my previous Skywatcher, and Meade. The Astrozap 6" f/8 I owned was of very good quality optical-wise, but the coatings (just multi-coated) show a bit more reflective quality, then the ES which are fully multi-coated.

Overall, I'm impressed with the ES 6" f/6.5, particularly for the $, which Ed pointed out in the review.

ES 6" F/6.5 achro - A well balanced achro
Orion 4" f/6 Refractor. Also not bad for an achro

I love Ed's reviews! It's great to see him back.

Guess I have goth girl taste. Maybe there's a tattoo on my face in the future.

Jeff, I have the AR-5 and had an AR-6 clone - both had a perfect star test - the AR-5 is, aside from the color, theoretically perfect.

Yeah Ed is the bomb, but i mostly go with the girl next door type, does it the most for me, though my girl can glam up with the best of them and does have one small, tasteful tat.
