Stellarvue Tabletop Dob Mount
      #3798976 - 05/11/10 11:11 AM Attachment (70 downloads)

It arrived today! It's a beautiful mount with excellent craftsmanship. It is made from appleply plywood and finished in a natural color. Let me try to answer the most common questions.

First, the stats: weight 18.5 pounds; height 25"; base 20" diameter including legs. It uses nylon bearings in the base, and a 4" nylon bearing in the altitude adjustment. It comes standard with a plate for tube rings, but I added a Stellarvue 2" jaw (sold separately) so I can easily change telescopes.

Operation: unfortunately it brought clouds and rain (all the way from Califormia) But I got a chance to try it out this morning. The motions are very smooth on both axes, the altitude adjusts with the large knob, the azimuth with a bolt on the base. When used with a Newtonian, it can be comfortably used on the ground. It will hold a refractor, but the eyepiece is very low to the ground so a table is almost a neccessity.

Here it is with my 6" F/5 Newtonian. This mount is an excellent match!

The mount is tall enough for a 114x900mm reflector, a 36" long scope. The scope will reach zenith but you might have to adjust it in the rings a bit to clear the base bolt.

Below is my Stellarvue 102mm F7 doublet refractor. I was very please at the mount's performance of a scope this size and weight. Dampening times are at most 2 seconds, and with proper adjustments and carefull operation dampening is very quick, less than 1/2 second.

I already love this little Dob mount. I can't wait to get it out under the stars!

Sorry, I should have mentioned. Go to the "Lowest Priced Telescopes" link on the Stellarvue site. He doesn't have the mounts listed separately, but you can call for a quote for one of those mounts. My understanding is that supply is limited right now. But these are made by a wookworker near Stellarvue so if interest picks up he can get some more made.

I feel your pain. But resistance is futile.

Hi David-

Looks great! Is yours the 4.5" set/mount or the 6"?

John

Thanks John, I think it looks great too. That's a nice job that Vic's cabinet maker has done here. Mine is the one with the 4.5" reflector. The only difference is the height, the one for the 4.5" reflector is taller. IMO $229 is not a bad price just to get the mount! I already had the ota's so I just didn't see a need to buy another one.

Thanks I found it, very pretty!

This is *exactly* what I'm looking for for my newt build. I just ordered one from Shelley at SV. Thanks for letting this cat out of the bag, David!

Let me know what you think JT.

Your 6"F6 will make a nice wide field reflector. Are you putting a 2" focuser on it?

Yes- I have a blue moonlight single speed that I will use. The sticking point are the Protostar Black Lite tubes which are a couple weeks from being in stock. I have everything else, I think. Once I get the tube, I should be all set to start building! Long time project- just now getting to the build part.

That sounds exciting! And unlike an F5, at F6 your reflector will be a little bit "easier" on inexpensive wide field eyepieces.
