      #3822345 - 05/22/10 06:45 PM Attachment (266 downloads)

I know this thread existed a while back, but its dead and gone so it needs to come back BIG TIME!!
Nothing against the other "Mount Picture Thread" stickied to the top, but there are only so many ways to se a GEQ

So lets see your Unistar, Discmount, T-Rex, Voyager.. you name it! Post it even if its some home-made rig. I love these kinds of threads! Thats probably why I start them

I want one exactly like that one. I've been looking for some time for a dual alt-az with Losmandy dovetails - are they still made, and how to get one in Australia ?

I notice the APM website doesn't show that configuration, and I'm not sufficiently fluent in German to figure out what they say.

Wow! Thanks for the great thread..especially Matty! I have been toying with getting a grab'n go mount for those iffy evenings when the clouds cannot make up their minds or I want to wander around the backyard to avoid tree blockage to get better views...espcially things right on the horizon or even tossing a small refractor into the car for a quick run to less blocked skies!(yes, I need a chainsaw as part of my kit ) There are alot of good ideas here! Thanks for the great pictures!

The English site for APM (http://apmamerica.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=58). When I ordered the mount I asked for the option to mount 2 scopes. The saddle plates are made by ADM (http://admaccessories.com/) and are the M6 Takahashi dual saddles which will take either vixen or losmandy dovetails. What I have found is balance is important with any Alt/Az. Had the setup out on friday and everyone said it was as smooth as silk with a TSA102 and FS78. With a handling weight of about 120lbs I don't think I will ever stress it out. I have purchased a used losmandy tripod and will be fabricating a 18" extension.

-
The Vixen Porta is not good as it is to carry my C6 as the finder is on the lower left side which is not convenient for me. I built a shorter side arm for it for better portability and I also fit a home made “push-to” to my C6 through the use of a digital level for the vertical axis and a plastic protractor for the base.

Here is my SV M1 mount holding my Vixen R130SF
The scope came as a package with the Vixen Porta-Mount, but I find I like this setup better. With the tripos legs adjusted just right I get the EP perfectly aligned with my eyeball at zenith. Super easy, super comfortable, and more portable than my Porta as this whole thing breaks down.

Manfrotto gear heads can be used as an AltAz mount. It is convenient that all photo tripod with 3/8” screw can be used on the Manfrotto gear heads.
The smallest is the Manfrotto 410 gear head (maximum load = 11 lb).

The larger one is the Manfrotto 405 gear head (maximum load = 16.5 lb). The Manfrotto 405 gear head is of similar construction as the 410. Both have slow motion and quick positioning control.

Hello Matt,
I was about to post that this thread seemed to have morphed from "Post a Picture of your ALT-AZ Mount" to "Post a Picture of your scopes that happen to be on an ALT-AZ Mount"

But then I double-checked and see that you were the original transgressor - naughty!

The largest of the three gear heads produced by Manfrotto is the 400 (maximum load = 22 lb). The Manfrotto 400 gear head is of different construction compared to that of the 405 and 410. In my opinion the design is a bit idiosyncratic. Though the 400t has slow motion control, there is no quick positioning like the other two. It is rather awkward to use with some telescopes and expensive. I think in actual fact it is more suitable for large format cameras in the studio.

Here's my homemade alt-az. It has 3.75" friction bearings on both axes and easily carries 20+ lbs loads. I'll post a photo soon of my MN66 mounted with an extension column on a Meade Field Tripod. The Oberwerk Jarrah wood tripod proved too flimsy for the combination of 10" extension column and 44" long OTA. Worked great with the C8, however.

Hi Sedat,

Yes. Here's some instructions and a diagram:

Parts (for 4" mount):

(1) 4" square tubing - .25" wall x 4.5" long
3.75" aluminum round stock - (1) 1" thick and (1) 2" thick
(1) 3/8"-16 threaded rod - at least 14" long
(2) 4" x 4" x .125" aluminum plate
(2) 3/8" ID 1/2" OD bronze bushings
(2) 3/8" ID 7/8" OD sealed bearings
(2) 3/8"-16 threaded knobs with lock nut inside
(2) 3/8" ID 1" OD washers
(2) 3/8" ID wave washers
(2) 6" square 1/16" thick Teflon

I recommend using a Unibit to drill the holes in the Teflon and in the square tubing. Aluminum stock is available cheap from www.metalsupermarkets.com. The knobs are from www.reidsupply.com - part KLK-20. Saddle from www.admaccessories.com. Everything else I got at the hardware store.

Polish the round stock until one side is REALLY smooth and the other is pretty smooth. Smooth the square tubing ends and check that the walls are flat and smooth. Use the two best adjoining sides for the large bearings. Smooth the edges of the thin sheet pieces so they're not sharp and will fit the tube ends.

Measuring carefully, drill 1/2" holes in opposing walls of the square tube, 2" (centered) from one end. It's important that the holes are directly aligned over each other and are square with the tube wall.

Once again measuring carefully, drill 7/8" holes in the other opposing walls of the square tube, 2 1/2" (centered) from the same tube end (or 2" from the other end). Same thing as above about alignment. This way the rods won't meet in the middle of the square tube (duh - although this did not immediately occur to me).

Drill and tap two 1/8" threaded holes in each end of of the square tube for attaching the plates.

Drill and tap a 3/8"-16 threaded hole (from the smooth side), 3/4" deep, of the 1" thick alum. round - THIS MUST BE CENTERED. Repeat with the 2" thick piece. Now drill and tap threaded holes on the other sides of the disks: for mounting your tripod (centered again) on the 2" thick piece, and for mounting your saddle on the 1" piece (holes offset from the center).

Drill and cut two pieces of the Teflon sheet to fit under the 3.75" round bearings. Make two smaller washers for the other side.

Install the bushings and bearings in the square tube. You may need to do some filing/sanding to get them to fit, but you want them snug or you'll need to epoxy them in place. Make sure the outside end of the bushings/bearings is flush with the outside tube wall and that the wall surface is smooth.

Cut the 3/8" rod into two pieces. Thread one end into the 3.75" disk (from the smooth side) and assemble the Teflon bearing, then the square tube, then the Teflon washer, then the steel washer, then the wave washer, then the knob. Do this with the other bearing assembly. Hopefully your holes are true, although you can bend the threaded rod a bit so that the bearing is flush with the tube wall.

Measure where to cut the threaded rod so it will not extend past the knob. Disassemble and cut the rod. Epoxy the threaded rod ends into the 3.75" disks. When dry, reassemble the parts. Drill holes in the metal plate to match the holes in the tube ends. Install the plates with small screws. Install the saddle on the 1" disk.

That's it. I've also built a version with 3" square tubing that works very well for lighter loads (up to about 15 lbs). The bearings (sealed and bronze) on both axes are not entirely necessary and you could make one of these much faster without them.

Hope this is helpful!

-Matt

Thank you, Ninja & Sedat!

Yes it works GREAT. I'm using one with my MN66: a 25 lb, 44" beast that is tough on any mount. Smooth as butter in both axes.

Unfortunately the Oberwerk tripods I've been using aren't up to the task. The mount itself (4" version) weighs 7 lbs and I have a 10" column (so the long tube won't hit the tripod legs) that weighs about 5 lbs, so a total weight approaching 40 lbs. I managed to score a Meade Field Tripod on Amart that should provide a solid platform for all that weight - it arrives today just in time for the Rocky Mountain Star Stare this weekend! Stay tuned for photos next week.

The Oberwerk tripods are both sturdy and attractive. The one I use with this mount is Australian mahogany (Jarrah) and it handles my 6" Mak-Cass with ease. But they use a surveyor tripod design that is only good for about 25-30 lbs total load. When I had my huge Mak-Newt on it with the extension column it was easy to tip over. The Meade tripod is designed for big fork-mounted SCTs so it should be a lot more stable.

I know, kinda ghetto.

Removed the 76MM firstscope from the factory table top base.

Mounted it to an inexpensive Meade surplus tripod I picked up off Fleabay.

I've actually reworked the attachment to use a pair of cheap scope rings. I'll try to get a "new and improved" pic soon.

Bob, I'm working on that. I took photos of the parts, etc. More important than specific dimensions are the little quirks that surfaced while playing with the prototype, as well as the finished mount. My idea was that anyone with basic hand tools can build something similar, although power tools are a plus.

I just received a new scope (Astro-Tech AT72ED) which is double the weight of the Celestron I had on the mount. I have to play with the elevation arm a bit so I can figure out how to make it smooth while holding the weight of the scope near horizontal and azimuth.

Anyway, I will be posting more soon. Thanks for the compliment.

My ALT/AZ made from an EQ5 mount. I sold the Synta 120mm F5 and the mount hold an Antares 1529.

That's sweet Neo...the machining is very clean and the minimalism is wonderful. Did you mate your mount to an LXD 55 tripod? Clear skies!

Thanks nightowl !

I've machined as little as possible on this one. The arms of the fork are in fact metal pieces (I don't know the exact term) used in wood buildings to reinforce the structure. It was very useful bicouse the holes are readily made so I just could assemble everything.

No, I haven't used a LXD tripod, but it could be done with a simple adapter, I'm sure. The fork is fixed on a simple aluminum disk laying around, seating on a teflon washer on the base of the tripod. The tripod it's from some old Eq2 mount.

Here is myCelestron C5 on a modified AltAz mount with a Velbon carbon fiber tripod. It is modified from a Mini Porta clone and the whole set up can be put into a small back pack for travelling。
