Just picked up a set of 6" AP rings. Keep us informed.
My tube is ready to cut at 37.5" I have a guy who will powder coat it locally.

I love it! Never thought of using wood clamps that way. I don't have a binoviewer so obviously my tube will be longer. Was going to cut my tube today but wasn't feeling too good. Maybe tomorrow after work. My tube is at my place of employment. Makes it easier that way, and I live 9/10ths of a mile away.

Ron, Looks great! Where did you get the rings? I hope it's just an illusion, but the cell looks like it's mounted at an angle to the tube. Hope your gonna give it first light tonight!

I measured my local gravity field and compensated with the beveled front cell (optical illusion, curvature from the pocket camera that I used).
Rings I got off of Cloudy Nights shop and swap. I was kinda looking for some and jumped on them when they came up.
I need to learn how to collimate the thing, it's a wee bit off under high power.

On bright objects I'm getting a halo or foggy cloud of brightness around them when in focus. On one side of focus I get well defined rings (collimation looks good) and out of focus on the other side is messy.
No dew issues, flocking seems to working well, but I have not blackened the edges of the lenses yet. Two different diagonals, different eye pieces, no change. Any tips or hints on the problem.

Is the lens in the cell the right way around? Is the crown element the right way around? What condition is the spacer in?

I agree with Phil. Most likely problem is that the wrong side of the lens is facing the sky.
I wouldn't blacken the lenses. If you do decide to go ahead with that, do it only after everything else is completely done.

I came to the same conclusion this morning. I'm betting I fipped the front element around during the cell swap. I recall something similar happening with a friends scope years ago - just took a while for the memories to come back.
You guys and Vinnie seem to be confirming this.
Spacer was in good condition last time I saw it. Once I take things apart again I may find out otherwise.
While targeting Jupiter last night it did seem to be rather colour free; I hope that stays the same once I correct the error!

I plan to use aluminum duct tape to replace the spacer. Has anyone done this and if so how many tabs of tape?
Also - What is the easiest way to tell which is the crown element?

I'm using 3 aluminum tape tabs. The least curved of the double convex lens faces forward, see attached.

Ah, the test will be if these older eyes can tell the difference in radius between the two sides.
Thanks for sharing that sir.

It's easy to tell the difference. Sit in the kitchen and put the lens on a clean cloth on the table. Catch the reflection of the ceiling light on the surface of the lens. The steeper curve will have a larger reflection. If you can't guage the difference, put a lamp on the table and get the reflection of that.

Since there's already a problem with the objective, why not just flip the crown over, put the scope back together, and look through it to see if the problem goes away?

Chuck, you are da man! The problem was worse than I expected and your drawing saved me several minutes of reassembly. Here is an unretouched photo of some lights taken with my Pentax DSLR.

Looks darn good to my eye! Jupiter is next, when it gets dark. The different radius are pretty easy to tell apart I didn't have to ask the wife to look for me. My honor is intact!
So far I'm pretty impressed with the lens. I didn't get images this good with my dob when I first got it (shot coating, bad collimation) and better contrast than my SCT.
We need to get some of you other folks to complete your scopes so you can get out there and collect dew. Or photons.

Jupiter shows some purple fringing but not nearly as bad as my Celestron 102mm wide field. I can see a moon coming off the limb, the beginning of a shadow transit and the atmosphere, at times, is very very crisp. Sweet! Even my wife is impressed.
The CG-5 is not enough mount and if I continue to use it, I really need more counter weights.

Since I have never built a refractor, please excuse my stupid questions. How large of aluminum tape tabs ?
I was hoping a CG5 would do or a Losmandy GM8. Sounds like they are too small.
Thanks for all the answers.

GM8 might be OK. If you avoided the craw mach kits, used the original cell, the weight would be about 5lbs less and that would be enough to use the CG5.
I messed up and the binoviewer won't come to focus, need to lop off another 1". I need to decide if I want to do some more cutting.
