Constellation Leo, June 6, 2010 Late Twilight
      #3851237 - 06/07/10 02:25 AM Attachment (44 downloads)

On this Sunday evening in early June, Mars could be seen about 50 arc minutes above the star Regulus on the right side of this sketch made in late twilight. The bright object in Virgo below Leo’s hind quarter on the left is planet Saturn. After a day of on and off clouds and rain I consider myself lucky to have witnessed this splendid view.
This is an inverted sketch made on light brown craft paper. The trees were done with white Conte’ crayon, the stars with HB graphite pencil, the planets with different shades of blue pencils tested first to see what shades of yellow and orange they inverted to. The time of this sketch was 9:00- 9:30pm local daylight savings time (CDT).

very nice sketch of a beautiful sight, Mars is within a low power eyepiece distance from Regulus, i did some observing last night, it was very clear but the seeing was aweful, saw the dumbell pretty clearly which is unusual from my lp location perhaps i should give dos sketching a try as the planets ae in a temporary lull, anyway very cool realistic naked eye view of leo.

Interesting, inverting colors! So brown gets blue... Why didn't you sketch on a blue paper?

Ging-Li, Tom, Jef,

Thank you all for your nice words.

Jef, actually I have done sketches like this on dark blue paper but I wanted to try something different.

Tom, I was surprised it was clear last night.

Frank,

I was hoping as the rain and wind blew last night someone was getting Mars and Regulas. Terrific job, thanks for sharing it.

Frank,

An excellent and beautiful observation of Leo, Mars, and Saturn. You have captured the grouping very nicely. I have wanted to make a similar observation but my schedule and weather have not allowed me to do so. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Lynn,

Thank you. Actually the sketch was very easy to do. By waiting til late in twilight I didn't really need to draw the trees just a suggested outline and white crayon below that, the stars in pencil and the tan paper does the sky for me. Pretty simple no tracing.
This is the original.

Carlos and Michael,

Thank you both for your comments.
I was hoping one of you veteran sketchers might have had a clear evening to capture the conjunction of Mars and Regulus. The color contrast was dramatic.

Michael,

Thanks, I was interested to see how it would turn out.
Three year ago I tried this techinique with a lunar sketch of crater Messier at the eyepiece and it did not come out very well but for a naked eye sketch of stars it works.

Frank
