Nice review! I have the older and slightly larger version of this scope (the long-tube DS-2130) and it has given me many years of excellent service. One of these days I'd like to pick up one of the short-tube versions just to tinker with. As you mentioned, the mount struggles a bith with the 8-AA batteries, so a common add-on is to use a jumpstart battery. With a nice stable (and beefy) power source the mount hums along all night long.

Have fun!

I have the long-tube Walmart 2130 and quickly realized that the included battery module couldn't maintain proper speeds, not enough juice. So I just jury-rigged up an AC wall wart converter and Bob's yer uncle. I performed my own laser pointer collimation and man, it gives great imaging. The 2130-long was kind of the inheritor of the Criterion RV-6 Dynascope legacy: dirt cheap, simple yet effective.
