Sun and Moon plus some DSOs
      #3877391 - 06/21/10 12:18 PM Attachment (43 downloads)

Hi everyone. It's been great to see so many sketchers posting lately.

Here are a couple of the sketches I've done recently. The reports are tucked away here and there in the observing forums.

This is from last night: Sketched scopeside on black Strathmore Artagain paper, charcoal, black wax pencil, white Conte’ crayon and pencils.

A few DSO:
Sketch created scopeside with Rite in the Rain paper, black ballpoint ink pen, #2 pencil then the stars cleaned up in Photoshop and inverted with adjustment to brightness and contrast.

Templates for DSOs are compliments of Jeremy Perez from his website.

Excellent batch of sketches Erika. Nice to see a couple of galaxy sketches from you.

Are the dashed lines in the 6384 sketch meteor trails or satellite trails?

Erika,

Very impressive sketches day and night. How do you like the 16" scope for sketching? It seems to work well from the details in your sketches.
I was out at the same time you were sketching Timocharis crater. The moon was only 34 degrees above the horizon for me. I like old luna at least 45 degrees for best views.

Great work.

Frank

Erika,

An outstanding set of sketches of the Moon (Timocharis), Sun (full disk and prominences), and DSO's. We have all missed your excellent observations and reports. I look forward to your future observations.

Carlos

Thanks everyone.

Eric, they were indeed satellite trails. I always get a kick out of spotting them, as well as meteors, zipping through my FOV.

Frank, that sketch sketch was the first lunar sketch I've done with the 16" that I can remember since I got it last winter. The views are so impressive that sketching with it was intimidating, especially lunar sketching because of the fast shadow changes and how long it takes to do a lunar sketch. After awhile, I was getting pretty good about pushing the scope around with my nose so I could have both hands free for sketching. It's a pretty good thing I don't have a delicate, cute little nose.

Erika, very nice sketches but I'm really impressed by the lunarsketch. How many time do you work on a sketch like that?

Hi Jef. Thanks for the kind words. This particular lunar sketch took about an hour to sketch. Normally lunar sketches take me a few hours to do, but this one was all by itself with not a lot going on around it.

Erika,

Have Paul get you a drive platform for your birthday or X-mas whichever comes first. Push and sketch is not fun and it will give you "boxer nose" or a "dented forehead" after a while. Yikes!

Frank

Erika,

It's wonderful to see this nice selection of your work. The solar and DSO sketches reflect your careful observational skills as well as your talent. I think Crater Timocharis is one of your best lunar drawings. The shading and texture are outstanding and the sunlit portion of the crater floor appears luminous.

Thank you. . I've been experimenting with stippling techniques for lunar. Mons Rumkin didn't turn out too badly but I could tell by Paul's expression that I still have a long way to go. Lol. It was great fun and I've purchased some different pens to make it better and completely doable at the eyepiece without the worry of getting ink on my gear.

I'm biting at the bit for a morning off work so that I can have a late night session to try it out.
