After looking at Mars several times during the past month, I didn’t see enough detail to bother with a sketch.
I decided on this late afternoon of fine weather I would locate Mars before sunset and have a close look.
I was surprised at the detail that was visible. At 95x I didn’t see much but when I went up to high power with a 6mm ortho eyepiece (375x) and a 4mm ortho (562x) details were there. This called for a sketch.
I was using my 18” f/5 scope and the atmosphere before sunset through most of twilight was excellent for steadiness.
Clearly visible at the eyepiece were the tiny remains of the north polar cap, Mare Acidalium, Niliacus Lacus on the CM, Chryse did not appear bright, Aurorae Sinus, Mare Erythraeum and Sinus Sabaeus which seemed to blend into M. Erythraeum.

Uwe, Carlos, Kris, Ivano, dweller and others this sketch is especially for those of you still sketching Mars at this late date. I assumed I was finished in April.

Sketching:

Crayola color pencil and graphite sketch.
White sketching paper 8" x 11"; HB graphite pencil, blue Crayola color pencil, blending stumps for blending orange and yellow Crayola pencil shavings.
Date 5/30/2010 – Time 1:15-1:40 UT
Telescope: 18 inch f/5 Dobsonian and a 6mm eyepiece 375x and 4mm eyepiece 562 x
Temperature: 24°C (75°F)
clear, calm
Transparency 3/5
Seeing: 4/5

beautiful late season mars sketch frank, great commitment to keep sketching mars! i had a look yesterday but packed up after 2 minutes because the seeing was horrible, couldn't even get to focus. it reminded me of the first looks of the season too bad the dull side is coming up for us now again.

Great late season Mars sketch Frank, you must have had good seeing, a fine scope and a sharp eye to get such detail from his tiny orb.

Frank
I'm always surprised that someone still can get some detail out of Mars. Excellent work.

Frank,

An impressive observation especially at such a small apparent diameter (6.1"). You have recorded a good amount of detail over the Martian disk. I have labeled the major albedo features noted. I am very proud of all members of the forum that continue to observe the red planet late in the apparition. This is not a competition but instead the members supporting each other to be the best observer possible. I will try to observe it myself soon. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Ging-Li, Kris, T5, Jef and Carlos,

Thank you all for your nice words and comments. Carlos, thanks again for the clean up with labels.

Saturn also gave a nice presentation on this night but I did not attempt a sketch.

Outstanding work, Frank. With Mars pointing its north pole at us so emphatically, I hardly recognize most of the features. Great job recording what you could see and many thanks to Carlos for sorting them out.

Tom,

Thank you. The planet disk is getting pretty small. Without near perfect conditions there will be no more Mars sketches for me for about 2 years.
It is nice to watch Mars closing in on Regulus.

Frank, using an 18" is unfair - because I don't have one !!

The NPC is really tiny now, it's amazing how much it has shrunk.

I tried a few times with the 8" but saw no detail worth drawing.

A great drawing of a very tough target, well done.

dweller,

You are correct about me using an unfair 18" but you should know that when the atmosphere doesn't cooperate it just makes for a bigger brighter blur.

Thank you.
