Full moon sketch
      #3887640 - 06/26/10 05:20 PM Attachment (53 downloads)

I stepped outside at 2am Pacific time to see the full moon pre-eclipse. when i went back out at 4:30 it was all clouds here. :-( The full moon image reminded me of my full moon sketch from last year. In honor of IYA, I recreated many of Galileo's sketches (not through yet), using my smallest telescope, a 70mm Televue Ranger at 19x, the telescope I have that is closest to Galileo's telescope and view (tho' my field of view was much larger.

Jane,

Thank you for posting your sketch - it's now one of my favorites. I especially like your having the three different sketches, which to me show how you worked up to the final. I often keep little quick squiggle-like sketches off to the side of my observing sketch logs to help me emphasize or frame a perspective of the object I view.

Seeing today's lunar sketches makes me want to join the fun, but it's once again cloudy here!

I can seldom resist watching a full moon rise; catching a little sketch time is even better. Thanks for posting; it reminds me of the opportunity this evening.

Thanks!! I had never bothered sketching the full disk before - it is a LOT of work, even though my sketches are tiny.

For this sketching series I did three sketches, a quick one, so I could go back and identify all the features later, a little more detail and a final. It was a lot of fun to see how much detail was visible at 19x through 70mm. Turns out a lot!

It was a lot of fun sketching Galileo's Pleiades, Jupiter+Neptune, the 17-18 day moon (with enlarged Albategnius on the terminator) was my very favorite, next to this full moon. :-)

Jane,

Very nice sketching. The final sketch looks great.
It takes a lot of concentration and it can be mentally exhausting.

Jane,

Well done! I agree with Jef, I like the second the best. More importantly I like how your post conveys the process you went through.

I agree, the middle sketch, in this case is the "best" one. I really love how it came out. :-) I think I'll post some of the other full disk sketches. It's a really fun project, and I had not sketched through my TV 70mm Ranger much, except for solar/h-Alpha :-)

Jane,
Really great sketch.:D I like how you show the rough sketches to the final sketch. Thanks for showing that. I'm going to try it that way.
I tried to sketch the full moon and it got to over whelming for me. I just couldn't get it the way I like it. I tried 3 times and then gave up:( I will keep trying.

Thanks! Luckily, the full moon is friendly phase to sketch - not in the middle of the night or anything. :-)

Jane,

An excellent set of Full Moon sketches. An interesting way of seeing the same object rendered in different ways. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
