This is a work in progress. I'm still working what I want in the scene. So far this is just a Bryce model.

Nice! I especially like the shock wave and the large gas giant - good illumination on the limb of the giant, too.
My suggestion would be to do something with the yellow planet. Either delete it, thus giving you 3 things to focus on (the star, the gas giant, and the little planet in the distance) or maybe push it into the background as another planet in the star system that is about to be blasted by the exploding star.
I've never used Bryce, but I've heard about; how's the learning curve on it?

The learning curve is not bad, but it is mainly a scene builder (Landscapes and sky). It is not a very good 3D modeler if you want to make complex 3D models. There is no modifiers for the basic shapes it offers. I'm learning 3d Studio Max currently and am planning on buying it in the next month. It is not cheap but I like computer art as much as I do astro-imaging and I don't need clear skies and moonless nights to have fun.
Here are so examples of models I built using Bryce. The road wheels and tracks are borrowed from models I bought that I use in my work to explain aviation and UAV concepts. That is why I bought Bryce. I wanted a scence generator that I could place properly presective models in and convert to tiff files and then convert to jpegs for Power Point presentations. I built everything in this image using Bryce except the roadwheels and track. This is a MLRS firing.

Here is another example. Not a very accurate Paladin but good enough for my concept briefings. As you can see as long as you don't have compound and complex curves you can easily figure a way to get around the limitations and have fun.

Finally here is what I am talking about as to what I really use Bryce for. This is single image I produced in Bryce and inported into Photoshop to add the gun arcs and text. It then becomes a jpeg and portered over to power point where I'll add more text and other misc. stuff to the image.
So there you have examples of what you can do and what the limitations are. Bryce will import complex models you just can't build them in Bryce. The Helicopters and aircraft are models I either purchased or downloaded for free and modified. The AWACS is actually a 737 free model that I added two more engines and a radom to.
For Astro-Art I think Bryce works great. Give it a try it is not expensive. Hoped this helped.

Interestingly, I work in the defense industry, so I've seen similar pictures, though usually in a naval context - so THAT'S how they did them! I wondered about that...
Very cool pictures you have there, Charles! Thanks for the information, and I look forward to your future creations.

The cheap people do them this way. The pros use 3d Studio Max or Maya. For cloudy weekends Bryce is fun to play with.

How on Earth do you people create such amazing images? What software do you use? I'm really curious as to how you create pictures like this.
