T Cas

I looked just recently at this star from my light polluted city and was pleased to find I could see it. Looks like I'll get to watch as it brightens.

I took another look at this last night. I found it although there were some variable clouds. I got to try out my 12mm Nagler. It gave me an excellent 1 deg FOV. I had a look at V Cas as well.

Remember that you don't observe this kind of stars more than once a week. Avoid bias!

Thanks. I was thinking along these lines last night. If I follow it too frequently, how would I notice change. I'll need to put together a list of stars I can follow.

Hi John,

If you want a good list here can you find a list that is suited for our new observers:

The AAVSO also has an excellent list of easy to observe stars:

The only comment I'd have here is that I find T Cas to be a difficult star ... the nearby bright star is a handicap to visual estimation at low power, especially when the variable is faint, the brightness near maximum is uncomfortably balanced between binocular & small scope ranges and (at any rate here) it's often too near the zenith to be comfortably observed with a "straight through" instrument (ordinary binoculars). Couple all this with the Purkinje effect (to which all red stars are subject) and it's something of an awkward customer.

Its' been some years ago that I have observed T Cas. So I don't remember if it was difficult.

You can see in this attached lightcurve that I have done a lot of observations of T Cas. The last two years I have stopped with visual observing because I'm doing photometry now. But I'm going to buy a small scope so that I can do some visual observing while my other setup is doing photometry. T Cas will be again on my observing program.

The blue crosses are my observations.

The finder charts are helpful as well. Perseus will keep me busy.

It's been a while since I've made an observation on this star. It's really the only variable I follow. I'll have to watch this summer. When it gets to around 12, I hope to get to a dark sky sight and make an observation.

One good thing with this class of star - when you have them in the field, you can't miss them
