Hi Everyone,

I've been away for a while, but I see from all the new posts that you've all been busy. Last week I attended the Green Bank Star Quest 7 where I conducted a couple of sketching workshops. I'll post more on that in a separate thread. While I was at GBSQ 7, I got a chance to scan this sketch I did last year. I had given it to one of the organizers of Star Quest, the Central Appalachian Astronomy Club ( http://www.caacwv.com/ ) as a gift and never had a digital copy in my files. These craters happen to be near the terminator now and I wondered if anyone had been observing or sketching them.

The sketch was done on the observing field at GBSQ 6 with Conte' crayons and a white Derwent watercolor pencil on black Artagain paper. I just have a little experience with this media, so feedback is welcome.

Regards to all--your hard work is inspiring!

Michael,

A beautiful color sketch of this region. These are very impressive craters in your sketch.
I made a sketch of these two at high sun in February of 2008. My sketch is mirror image reversed from yours.

Frank

Thanks, Mathteacher--the color in the sketch has a story that goes with it that I'll share later when I have a little more time.

Frank, thanks for posting your 2008 sketch--it's very interesting to compare. This pair of craters is a great target that I'd like to revisit after the observatory is finished.

Btw, I've added a bunch of new pics to my thread in the Observatory forum. Twin Sugars Observatory Gotta go--we're putting the roof on today.

Michael,

An excellent observation of Atlas and Hercules. The shadows and walls are very striking. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Frank- An excellent observation of Atlas and Hercules as well. Much detail has been recorded over the crater floor and environs. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Here's the story about the color in my drawing. I started the sketch on the observing field at GBSQ 6 after dark with Luna poised to set within the hour (most, if not all, star parties are scheduled for moonless or nearly moonless nights). I had to use my red light exclusively or risk howls of protest from the DSO observers and imagers surrounding me, but that was OK--I could see fine.

I have a small tray of Conte' crayons with a variety of colors including shades of white, gray, black, red, and brown. I thought I knew where the white and gray crayons were in the tray and worked happily away on the sketch until it was done, then put it away and turned the telescope to other objects.

The next morning when I got out the sketch, I was dismayed to discover the craters rendered in brown and red. Under the red light of my headlamp, brown and red crayons appeared gray and white.

Hoping to salvage the sketch, I went over it with the white and gray crayons and you can see the result. Maybe my mistake was a little serendipitous--it seems to look OK.

Michael,
Interesting mistake between the crayons under red light.
Still is a nice sketch though.

Michael,

You are welcome. Your observation is an excellent one in any color.

I desaturated your observation to produce a monochrome image then blurred it a little. I thought that you might want a black and white version.

I look forward to your future observations.

Carlos

That was worth repeating a few times.

Michael, you've done a fantastic job and it was great seeing the comparison between your and Frank's sketches. I've sketched them both in 2005 and um...mine leaves more to be desired.

Hi Michael

Glad your sketching workshop went well for you :-)
I have not had the pleasure as yet to sketch Atlas and Hercules properly . However they are featured in a small way within an old sketch from 2007 here on CN
My Atlas and Hercules included in another sketch

Dee

Thanks, Dee. I know you know what it's like to conduct a sketching workshop.

I'm glad you posted that link that recognizes Agnes Clerke--nice work! I can think of few greater honors than to have a lunar feature named after oneself. Agnes is in some good company with one of the Titans and the son of Zeus.
