Jupiter from France again, the shadow of Io can be seen transiting the Jovian surface, Europa, Callisto and Ganymede formed an orderly line. Some detail starting to be seen now in the NEB.

Limoges, France.

27th July at 01:30UT.

Celestron 100ED at x150.

Good work! Very interesting and unusual configuration of the moons. I believe I observed the same oval and notch in the NEB four days later, but the oval was not squashed when I saw it and the notch was on the other side. Could it be a different notch, or the two features moved in relation to each other? (Or is your image inverted but not reversed?) Also, I saw similar discontinuities in the NTB and NNTB.

Mike

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the kind comments.

I was using a prism diagonal so I think the image was the right way around but upside down.

Clear skies.

Good, then the relation of the oval to the notch in your drawing agrees with mine, confirming each other's observations. But it does appear that the oval changed shape over the course of a few days. My sketch is attached. (I didn't enter positions for the moons.)

Clear Skies,

Mike

Mike, yes that's good correlation. I'm sure yours is a more accurate drawing as I'm assuming from the extra details that you used the 10" scope giving better resolution. I will now start using a larger scope to try and get more detail. I think this is going to be a really good few months for planetary astronomy.

Dweller,

An excellent observation of Jupiter and it's satellites. It is always fun to watch transits of the jovian satellites. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Thanks for the feedback, Jupiter is such a big target after Mars. I think it's going to be a lot of fun watching Jupiter this Autumn (fall) - still haven't seen the GRS though !!
