Two pastel sketches of the Perse´d meteor shower
      #3980282 - 08/13/10 08:02 AM

Last night I wanted to try something different: drawing a meteor shower instead of photographing it. First I rendered a background with only stars. I used a white pastel pencil for that. Then I added a horizon with a black pastel. One for the sky around midnight; one for two hours later.

I took these background drawings to my favourite observing site. I layed down on a comfortable chair and added every meteor I observed on my pefab sky drawing. After more than 3 hours of observing the clouds got too thick to see any meteors, so I went back home where I added the ground "haze" and the high clouds. These are the results:

I must have missed a few bright meteors because while drawing them I heard my fellow observers yell at those fireballs that (of course) showed up when I was drawing the faint one from a few seconds earlier... But a total of around 35 meteors (some of which were very bright witch trails) definitely made it a night worthwhile!

Roel

Beautiful work. The clouds and horizon are as impressive as the meteors! Did you use a blue paper?

Roel,

A beautiful pair of drawings that captures the essence of this year's Perseid's shower.

An interesting aside: I was out observing the meteor shower a few hours after your drawings (from 0535-0935 UT). Your drawing depicts alpha Per and beta Per (Algol) at about the same brightness. After spending 4 hours observing the radiant, I was ready to quit when I noticed that Algol appeared to be dimmer (as compared to alpha Per) than it had been when I began watching for meteors.

After coming indoors, I looked up the minima of Algol--it was predicted for 1152 UT. Apparently Algol was almost 3 hours into the 5 hour eclipsing process by its companion in which it drops in magnitude from 2.1 to 3.4--this was the first time I have seen the eye of Medusa "wink".

Roel, these are fantastic sketches! I'm with Jef, did you start with a deep blue paper?

The way you have produced these really captures what draws me personally to astronomy. The sense of being grounded to the Earth, while open to the depths of the sky and basking in the beauty of it. The attention you gave to paper choice for the sky, the key stars you chose to plot (not too many, not too few), laying down the horizon, sky glow, clouds, and of course the actual meteor shower itself is outstanding.

I hope you do this again for the Geminids in a few months!

Roel,

Beautiful and accurate observation of the Perseid meteor shower. Your observations remind me of those made by the French astronomer/artist Lucien Rudaux and other artists of the past. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Carlos
