Adapting a CGE tripod for an Atlas mount
      #3990892 - 08/18/10 02:53 PM

Has anyone done this? If so could you please share some pictures? I am thinking of going this route as the increased stability would be most welcome...

Ajay

Hi Ajay,

Yes I've done it. It makes the setup rock solid with the
EQ-G on the CGE tripod. I have a CF C11XLT on the mount
with 35.5lbs of counter weight and pushing 35lbs in the
saddle.

Garry,

Wow. That is a very nice set up. You are hardly a journeyman.

Thanks you for the most informative pictures. So it looks like quite a bit of machining is in order. I found through a search that Orion makes a pier plate adapter (item #07359) for the Atlas. It is not currently available on line. Here's the link.

This might help reduce machining, but there's still the matter of adapting a column to fit the CGE top plate.

Since you have both tripods, I have an additional question: Would it be possible to directly attach the Atlas top plate to the tripod legs of the CGE? ( am guessing not or you may have done it yourself, but thought I'd confirm that.

Ajay,

Thanks. Journeyman only in the # of posts.

The Atlas top plate is not directly exchangeable with the CGE top plate.

An adapter column is relatively easy to make. You can order 6061 Pier Tube by the inch. This way you get the Pier height you need and recommend a minimum of 6"h. The raw inside dimension is a perfect fit on the CGE tripod head. Your machining could be as simple as filing/sanding the ends and drilling 6 holes.

Ajay, if you can make the pier yourself or machined locally then you need to call Curt Walker Adapter Plate . Ask him him to confirm his adapter dimension for mating with the 5.5"ID of the Pier. His design is for a Losmandy HD tripod but I believe in the discussion I had with him some months ago that the conclusion was it would be a match for the CGE pier too. For that matter if you don't have the CGE tripod yet get the Losmandy HD tripod and your good to go with his adapter plate.

Also, check out this link if you want to improve the stability of you current Atlas tripod Tripod Spreader .

BTW this should work for a CGEM too.

Garry, that's wonderful. I am sure this question has been raised many times and these last two should be extremely useful.

I took your advice and have started on improvements to my stock Atlas mount. I replaced the lower leg extensions with thick walled tube which already makes for a marked improvement. I have also figured out a way to improvise a large spreader tray. That will have to wait. Thanks for all the posts.

Ajay
