Gibbous Moon and Antares new
      #3989852 - 08/18/10 02:08 AM Attachment (32 downloads)

I made an observation of the Waxing Gibbous Moon (8.75 days old) and Antares (1.03m) using my Oberwerk 11 x 56 mm binoculars over the southwestern sky. The Moon and Antares were separated by 1.8 degrees. Tau Scorpii (2.81m) was visible towards the southwest (following) and Sigma Scorpii (2.87m) towards the north (preceding). I hope that others were able to view this conjunction as well.

A digital image produced in Pixelmator.

Carlos, thanks for posting because here in Belgium we missed the conjunction completely due to (a lot of) clouds...

Carlos,

A beautiful binocular scene of the moon near the heart of the scorpion. I was clouded out like Jef.
Always a great pleasure to see through your binoculars way up here in Illinois.

Frank

Thank you all for the compliments on my my Gibbous Moon and Antares conjunction observation. It was interesting to see the Moon nest to the heart of the Scorpion. I am sorry that your weather did not allow you to view it as well. I hope you get are able to view other conjunctions in the future.

I observed a similar conjunction of the Moon and Antares back in 2009 (February 17). This one was a naked eye observation.

Carlos,

Also a very impressive sketch. The glow about the moon is beautiful and the transparency is stunning.

Frank,

Thank you for the compliment on my earlier Moon and Antares (Scorpius) conjunction observation. That was also a very impressive sight and I am glad that I was able to capture the beauty of it. The best of luck in your own observations.

Carlos

Tommy,

Thank you for the compliment on my Moon and Antares (Scorpius) conjunction observation. The Moon and Antares do meet yearly when Diana the Huntress needs to beware the Sting of the Scorpion!
