Jupiter and Europa (21/08)
      #3996776 - 08/21/10 08:24 AM Attachment (50 downloads)

It was a long time ago I observed Jupiter with my 12". I didn't see much detail on the planet, except for the NEB. It was the first time I saw detail IN the belt (two bright streaks). Between the two bays (a big and a small one) there was a darker section. I'm not sure about the festoon. The shadow of Europa was just under the GRS (just visible on the edge). It looked like a air-balloon with a basket.
I guess I messed up the south side (up) of the planet. The three belts must be much closer one another and more to the south.

Jef,

An excellent observation of Jupiter. You have recorded some detail over the NEB. The Great Red Spot (GRS) on the following limb looks interesting. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

That's a nice one, Jef!

What a coincidence! I've observed the transit just a few moments later, but also saw that bright patch on the NEB (the only detail I was able to see in that belt). It was even visible in my 4" refractor at 250x!

I've been flipping back and forth between your sketch and Roel's sketch and they correspond very well. It's great fun to have two observations to study. Great work.

Jef,
One very fine sketch and observation of Jupiter detail and the shadow transit.

Thanks for the kind words. I found a photo around the same time by a flemish amateur and put the sketch of Roel and mine next to it.
The south side of the planet is not so bad sketches as I thaught. But it are not two bays because they are closed. And the dark section is smaler in reality than in my drawing. Is it a festoon or is it something else?

Jef,

A fine observational sketch--the comparison shows how accurate you were. I caught Europa at the end of its transit a few hours later--will post the sketch soon.

Jef,

Your sketch looks great and it is fun to see the side by sides. The Jupiter sketching is on for sure and nice it is to see all these sketches here.

Frank

Nice compilation. I see I've missed the GRS. How's that possible? I must say that I didn't try and might have overlooked it. Maybe the difference in aperture... (I don't know if the GRS is visible through a 4")

Very nice indeed! Alas, we have nothing but cloudy nights here and I really am desperate to go out to observe- I have withdraw symptoms you might say!

Thank you all! It's funny when I have another look at the two sketches and the photo: Roel and me draw both the shadow of Europa to small.
