The Copernican Abyss new
      #3992207 - 08/19/10 02:25 AM Attachment (39 downloads)

I managed to witness a sunrise on crater Copernicus just after nightfall. This was a sketching opportunity I did not want to pass up. Copernicus crater at 90 plus kilometers in diameter and 800 millions years old is one of the showpiece craters of the moon whenever it is visible.
The rim of Copernicus at this observation was coming under full illumination while the crater floor remained in cold darkness.
A pair of 7x binoculars is all that is need to show this crater to the observer. As the moon approaches full phase the ray system of this crater can be seen to best advantage.

Sketching:

For this sketch I used: white sketching paper 12x 10, HB, 4B, 6B graphite pencils, a blending stump, Artgum eraser and brush. After scanning, Brightness was decreased (-2) and contrast increased (+2) using Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Telescope: 10" f/5.7 with 9mm ortho. eyepiece for 161x
Date: 8-19-2010, 1:00 - 1:30 UT
Temperature: 22 C (72 F)
Partly cloudy, calm, 60% humidity
Seeing: Antoniadi III
Colongitude 20.4
Lunation 8.9 days
Illumination 73 %

very dramatic sketch, sunrise over Copernicus is one of the coolest sights on the moon, and you captured it perfectly thanks for sharing.here is a snapshot i took with my digital camera afocal handheld photo through my 6 inch achro. of Copernicus under similar lighting conditions a couple of years ago.

Frank, fine sketch and report of Copernicus! Thanks. I read somewhere you can see the crater with the naked eye, but I never tried...

Frank,

An outstanding observation/sketch of sunrise over Copernicus. You have captured this moment perfectly! The shadow over the center, steep walls, and complex terrain are very well rendered. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

This observation belongs on ASOD!

Carlos

What a great opportunity and a delightful sketch. Good one to catch at low power.

Tommy5, Jef, Carlos, Roland

Thank you all for you kind words and remarks on this quick sketch.
--
Tommy5 nice shot of the same region of the moon from last year. Your fine photo is north up and my sketch is south up but the shadows are similar although my moon is waxing and yours is waning.
--
Jef, I have read that as well but I think I would need better eyesight to see it.
--
Carlos and Roland I am waiting to see more of your excellent renderings of the night sky delights.

Frank

Jim and Tom,

Thank you both. When the large lunar craters give us that dramatic look it is difficult to pass up the sketching opportunity, because it is so much fun to try and capture the scene.

Clear skies to both of you,
Frank

Jef,

Thank you. You have got to post one of your sketches of Jupiter on ASOD this late summer or early Fall.

Frank
