Jupiter 22 Aug.
      #3998559 - 08/22/10 05:58 AM Attachment (67 downloads)

Last time I sketched Jupiter was about 20 years ago when it had also 'lost' one of its bands. The view last night inspired me to find out what's still left of my sketching technique - not much.

This was my best view yet of the GRS; the first time I definitely saw an orange tint to it.

Aug. 21-22 at 01:00 - 01:15 CET (23:00 - 23:15 UT).
107/700 refractor at 175x with Lumincon 82A very light blue filter.
Seeing good to very good.

Mark,

A very fine detailed sketch after a long layoff.
You should be sketching more often, this is excellent.

Frank

Don't be so modest. This is a more than fine sketch. You see as much detail in Jupiter with 1/3 of my aperture!

very nice sketch you have captured the turbulant neb very well, yes the grs does look orange now much darker then the usual pinkish/salmon/ tan color of past years.

Mark,

An excellent observation of Jupiter. I agree with everyone above that you have recorded a good amount of detail over the disk of Jupiter, especially the Great Red Spot (GRS) and NEB. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

A suggestion is to use a template for Jupiter with the proper dimensions (equator wider then the poles (~92%). Excellent templates may be found on Jeremy Perez's web site (as well as much information on rendering celestial objects).

I look forward to your future observations on the forum.

Carlos

Thanks for all the compliments, guys!
Carlos, I intended to compress the height after scanning, but it was such a hassle to get the sketch into the computer, that I forgot. I've re-attached a corrected verion. Thanks for the tip on the templates.

Mark,

Your observation was an excellent one to begin with as I was only making a suggestion for future ones. Your re-scanned image is perfect. I added a black background to it and adjusted the levels. I hope that you like it.

Carlos
