David, after attending 23 TSP's I developed these rules for deciding what to bring.
1. Decide what you want to do at TSP determine what gear will
be necessary to complete the project.
2. Make a thorough list using these guidelines:
a. If you might need it, take it.
b. If you plan to use it, take two.
c. If it is essential, take three.

Seriously, decide on a partial list of targets you wish to image, then make a checklist of all equipment necessary. Murphy's law is never more intense than in a situation of personal importance. far from resources and limited in time an space. If at the star party you lose a major system (mouint drive motor, camera, etc.) figure you are screwed and make the most of it. What is most aggravating is the loss of a seeming little thing (usb cable, 12-volt fuse for power inverter, etc.) so take extra of little things, and bring a thorough tool kit.
I will probably bring my 12-inch dob, my 11X80 binos on the couch potato chair, and my giant binos (20x125) as I do almost all visual now days.
Clear skies and clean glass,
Mike

Or for those of us that come TransAtlantic, a pair of binoculars - and the goodwill of the kind people willing to share big scopes!

I'm still blown away that you can get that 22" in the back of your Beetle. Now that's masterful packing!

I'm really working hard to complete the 24" bino before TSP. It's been really hard to find machinists to do small jobs because its not worth their time. I don't care if its not pretty... just hoping for functionality!

You would think they would be happy to have the work....

I have had the same problems with machine shops except for one local guy. He will do a small job for 20 or 30 dollars if I supply material or he has scrap. The big shops have a several hundred minimum, and don't really want walk-ins.

As for TSP, I think I will forego it this year. There are more important everyday things to spend the money on like gasoline, utilities, food, and the retirement fund.

Sorry you are going to skip it also this year, hoping next year will be better for all of us.

Dean

Dean,
Unfortunately, things are not looking up for the future. I may have already made my last trip out there to TSP. The markets are not doing well, and the retirement fund may only pay for basics. TSP is a luxury.

They're too busy making the big bucks on oil field jobs. Can't blame them really... you take what you can get when you can get it these days to be able to survive.

Hey all,

Not sure if its been announced already but I just got word that the drug store in town is open once again and serving those famous milkshakes that have been absent for too long!

So anyone attending this years TSP is in for that extra special treat!!

I am fairly certain there will be plenty of spots. Due to the remoteness of the place and the price of gasoline, it will not be anywhere near full.

John, don't lose hope for the future! Last year I felt exactly as you do today, telling my wife we would never see Ft. Davis again. While we have had to budget carefully and forego most other 'luxuries' we are on track to return this year. The bad economy has affected most of the people in the country but for some of us it is a little better than a year ago. I do not suggest a pollyanna lack of reality, but it is easy to lose all hope when things are low. That's just what I did last year and now climbed partway out of the emotional pit which was even more frightening than the financial pit.
Clear skies and clean glass,
Mike

That's good to hear. But the icecreams from that old railway carriage were pretty good last year.

I wish I was coming to TSP this year but I can't. Hoping to come next year, if I can, but I am about to order an 18" dob which will have to be paid for so I don't know...

I'm glad you're going to be there Mike, TSP wasn't the same without you there last year.

Ken,

I spoke with the TSP housing gang and there are still camping spots available. However, you won't be able to use electrical directly into your tent trailer if that is what you require.

Derek

I still have not told Phoenix that we will not be going as I am trying to find something closer that we can attend.

No the only problem is that Phoenix will be in school then and she has had perfect attendance every year of her young school career.

You don't have to go to a star party do you? The field should be open for members and have people on their for the new moon weekend.

You and Phoenix should go? Is she old enough to have to deal with finals? If not I say hit the road with your daughter for some quality family time!

Hi Dean, I am not sure if the field is open all the time and where I live I have Mag 7 skies, so it would be a moot point. I just really wanted her to experience a true star party before she discovers boys and sadly that has already happened.
