Amazing shot Alex. As good as any AP set up meant for it.

Great shot Alex! I'm curious to ask- what are some of the biggest differences you've noticed in re: the pier/GEM system vs the alt-az besides the more obvious ones, like the length of image capture time?

Was aiming for M16 eagle nebula tonight, but the cloud was in the way coming and going so between gaps imaged M27 and M57. Here is M27.

Nice shots Astroman. I wish my eyes could see the colors like that in the EP. Can see M 57 with ease around 10:30pm here, but just grey with black background. But still nice to look at. Keep the pics commin!!

Here is my cheating turn on M57 First is the full frame shot. 28x 2min through (ex-8SE) C8 OTA on CGEM. Autoguided with Orion ST80 and Orion SSAG. 10 darks. Processed with DSS. Curves applied in Photoshop.

Here is same data, only I selected a region near the nebula in DSS and applied 3x Drizzle function for stacking. Output from DSS loaded in Photoshop for additional curves and some clean up of bloated stars (make stars smaller with Carboni's tools):

Nice photos of M27 and M57 - especially so since you say these are both single frames with no processing

That's an awesome shot of M57 Alex. Can't wait for more

Aren't autoguiders great alexpost!!! Not so good in the wind judging from the egg shaped stars on the M27 image, But they do save throwing away time on bad subs. Also a lpr filter cuts down on setting black levels due to light pollution.

Astroman, there was no wind. Which leads me to conclude something else is in play. Perhaps the much discussed differential flexure? Since this is my first real AG photo, I am pleased to observe issues so early. Question: why do other stars not look oval ? That's the real puzzle for me. Another puzzle is why do we see only one star within the eye? If you look at Hubble images, there are two stars of approximately equal brightness inside.

Completely agree on black levels. The full frame image above had no flats. I guess it will take a while to explain the relationship. From imaging perspective with the pier that allows 2 min+ subs, that was by far the biggest difference compared with NexStar.

Hi Alex, Sorry for the confusion. I was referring to my egg shaped stars in my M27 image. Your stars look fine.

As for the double star in the hubble images, never seen it.I assumed one central star.

That's not another star in the central region of the Hubble image.

As every astrophotographer knows - that's a hot pixel

Seriously guys, I only ever clocked one star in the centre of M57 - not the one at the 3 o'clock position! A quick Google and yup, two stars in the central region of M57. Now where did that 2nd star come from

Art, I think a better question is where did it go? It was clearly there when Hubble took the picture. Hubble M57

I can't get the colours right but perhaps these are how they are meant to be having been captured on an experimental basis using a Lumicon UHC filter. (I've never used it photographically before).

Object: The Witch's Broom" NGC6960.

'Scope: 102mm f/5.9 Achromat + Baader Semi-Appo filter.
Mount: HEQ5 Pro.
Camera: Canon 350D. + UHC filter. 15 X 200 Secs. Unguided. Dark subtracted. No Flats.

Captured in Nebulosity. Processed in P/Shop CS2.

Best regards,
Tel
