Comet 103P / Hartley
      #4090494 - 10/03/10 07:51 PM Attachment (62 downloads)

This is a sketch I did on the 1st of October, a few days ago, shortly after I got my 6MM TMB Planetary II Eyepiece. I've got to say though, this sketch doesn't even come close to the views I had that night. It basically opened a whole new area of Astronomy up to me. It was quite small, and I'm glad I got that kind of magnification available to me when I did - I'm sorry, but for something that's supposed to be a naked eye comet shortly, it's really faint and tiny! The core was the brightest component, and it quickly descended in brightness the further you looked from the core.

Brandon,

An excellent observation of Comet Hartley. You have captured the nucleus and coma very nicely. I am glad that the new 6 mm TMB Planetary II eyepiece is a good one for you. I look forward to your future observations.

Carlos

Fine sketch! I see that the core is not in the middle of the coma. Curious I can see that in my futur observation of Hartley.

Thank you for the fine compliments! Carlos, I'll be posting a sketch on here of M13 (sorry, again) before it goes below the horizon as soon as I finish it. I decided to sketch it to thank all of the people who suggested it to me, I'm glad they told me not to get the Orion ED-2 5.1MM. It would have been to much anyways.

Be on the look out for the core being not centered in the coma, I could just barely make it out, as it wasn't very bright.

Brandon,

Nice sketch of 103P/Hartley. I was observing about the same time as you (although with much less aperture/magnification). Interesting to think that the Deep Impact/EPOXI spacecraft will be passing close to 103P/Hartley in November. I hope you revisit Hartley soon.

Brandon,

This is a very nice sketch of this quick moving comet.
A dark sky is a must with this comet.
Thanks for posting.

Frank

Thank you both for the kind comments on my sketch! I'm trying to get back out this Wednesday to Saturday because of its close proximity to the double cluster (NGC 869/884) . Thank you for sharing that Deep Impact will be getting close. I'll check up on that. Thank you!

Nice catch, and it is pretty faint compared to some other recent ones. I got it once, but hope to see it again with a different star field and a little bit better conditions. I also did not see it entirely centered.

Great comet sketch, it is just too bright at night to see it from my suburban location, thanks for giving us a peak.

Thank you for all of the kind comments on my sketch everyone! I'll post another one on here later that I sketched last night ( Oct. 7 ) as it was within One Degree of the double cluster.
