Windows 7 64-bit new
      #4103385 - 10/09/10 01:23 PM

Early this year I purchased two new PC’s with Windows 7 64-bit OS to replace the old guys. The only problems I had was getting a ToUcam driver to work and then my Word-2003 started opening, closing, loading and saving slow as cold glue.

First, I downloaded the Philips Webcam SPC900NC drivers for all Windows versions at:

http://tinyurl.com/3yc4jcu

And then followed the good advice for the webcam problem at:

http://mrgnome.wordpress.com/2010/09/07/win7-philips-toucam-windows-7-driver-fix-problem-solved/

It works great now.

Somehow the Word 2003 “Normal.dot” file in Office templates was corrupted, so I followed the advice of:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

After deleting and replacing Normal.dot, Word now opens, closes, loads and saves like it always did.

So, if you are hesitant about getting Windows 7 then do it, it works better than Win XP for sure, IMHO.

As an Apple fan I have to grudgingly agree. Running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on our home Dell computer. No issues at all so far other than the expectation that it would increase the performance of the computer (it's running 4GB of ram) have not quite been met.

I fully expected to have to buy replacement software (like Adobe Elements and/or Photoshop etc.) and this simply has not been the case.

At this point I think the lack of performance has more to do with the hardware than the OS.

Yeah, Vista is aggravating and reminds me of operating a MAC.

I'm thinking of getting a Windows 7 Netbook at some time. I view it more as a "utilitarian" device that would allow me to use a guide scope of my choice as well as possibly CCD and/or control my DSLR and help with focusing. It is cheaper and more versatile then buying guiding equipment and focusing equipment with smarts or external controller.

Not too long ago everyone was saying to avoid 64bit Windows 7 because of lots of incompatibilities with drivers and software amateur astronomers need to use out in the field. Is this no longer the case?

It's getting better. The vendors are catching up on their 64bit driver work and there are more work arounds. I don't think I've heard any recent issues with the applications.

There are still a few older cameras that don't have 64bit driver support. If you were looking to buy an autoguider, CCD or DSLR today you'd be fine with new items. Stuff that's not new will mean that you'll have to do some digging to verify that there are drivers.

You'll also have to be aware of what "it works" means to some folks. I would want to verify that "it works" means specifically that it works in an astro photography sense. The best example of this are some recent posts about older Canon DSLRs which have quite a few folks on non astro forums claiming that "it works" when all they are doing is downloading images from the camera (which is all 99% of the users actually need). A closer examination revealed that external shutter control and other functions were still not available.

One thing I would need is support for a Canon 500d, do you know if there is FULL support for that model in 64bit Windows 7?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it appears to me to be an "almost".

From the Canon support site both the EOS utility and Zoombrowser EX are Win7 64bit compatible with the 500D. So all the comm functions work to and from the camera. What doesn't appear to be supported in Win7 64bit yet is the Raw codec. I don't know that that means for AP support.

I would be pretty comfortable that since Canon has put the effort into the two other apps mentioned (and by default the device driver) that they will eventually get to supporting the codec.

Just be thankful that you don't have the older 350D.
