an impression of Copernicus
      #4191604 - 11/17/10 09:23 AM Attachment (53 downloads)

Normally I observe the moon with my 8 cm refractor. But the 15th of november I was looking at Jupiter with my 12". The seeing was not at all good, so I turned my telescope to the nearby moon. Because the apodizing mask was still in the scope I had two (kind of) rainbows around the moon. Funny to see... And the mask helped for the brightness of the moon (I have no moonfilter).
The amount of detail on the moon with a 12" is overwhelming. I'm not skilled enough to sketch (in a short period of time) all of crater Copernicus. I even didn't try it. So this is rather an "impression" than a real try to sketch a "photo".
To make the shadows really black and bright regions really white, I played with the settings of my scanner. Later I put the sketch in grayscale.
All critic is welcome, because I find the 3D-effect is not coming out very good. Maybe I should also have used black paper instead of gray.
Hope you like it.

Copernicus, 15/11/2010, 19.45-20.45 UT, 12" + apodizing mask @ x171, lunation 9.6 days, illumination 70%, alt. 35°

Most sketches on gray paper suffer from the inacurrate shading of the grey areas. This one is an example for fine gradual shading of these areas and an encouragment for me to try this method again.

Jef,

It looks excellent to my eye 3D and all.
Don't be afraid to try this at the eyepiece.
What is the worst thing that could possibly happen?

Frank

Jef,

An excellent observation of Copernicus. You have captured the terraced walls very nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Very nice sketch Jef. You recorded a lot of fine detail using the 8 cm refractor.

Best,

Eric
