I picked a 30" x 66" sheet of black pebble finish Formica from telescope shop. On the back is stamped "00909 1242 HGP NSF35 123274 Made in USA EV FORMICA Line 5 100308 0550" (whew!). Is this the stuff from which DOB's are made? Thanks in advance. Tom Duncan

Sounds to me like it could well be the so-called 'Ebony Star', the more so if obtained at a 'scope shop. The pebbled finish reduces stiction with teflon.

Post a picture of the surface and anyone who has seen the ebony star should be able to tell you if it matches...

Since Ebony Star is Wilsonart, it's not that. In New Zealand, all Formica sheets have the colour and finish printed on the back.

what you're interested in is the finish. It's either a three letter abbreviation (like "QRY") or a two/three letter code (UN, 75, 075, etc. -- "75" is QRY). On mine, it's stamped "QRY", which at least with Formica is the finish you want.
It's strange, because that code is usually what you see on Wilsonart laminates (perhaps it's a US thing?), and those obviously never include "FORMICA" as that's a trademark from a competitor. In the Wilsonart codes, the finish immediately precedes the NSF-35 and you want -50 for the correct "Ebony Star" finish for scopes, but "HGP" is something much more generic and IIRC not a finish (it refers to the thickness - HGP is "postforming", usually 0.99mm nominal thickness for the high pressure laminate itself).
I'm stumped. Are you sure there are no other Formica-specific codes printed somewhere else?

The only thing to be concerned about is the finish. Pebbly is good. Don't worry about the brand.

There are no other codes on the sheet. Here is a close-up of the surface finish...
If this stuff is usable for telescope applications, what is it worth (this sheet is large, 30" x 66")? Is this stuff hens teeth or a carton of milk? Tom

this is the Quarry finish we're using.
I'd guess your finish is fine too.

the 909 is the color black
the 1242 is for: 12 is the grade [postforming] 42 is the finish - crystal
hgp is postforming grade - you can heat it to bend around a bullnose [why they repeat the grade spec?]
nsf35 is for food service
