Amazing Kreskin can see through the box to reveal ... a scope?

After all, all you need to know about a scope is the original price.

PORTABLE! new [Re: mikey cee]
      #4647470 - 06/19/11 01:21 PM Attachment (38 downloads)

While searching for info on my new old Star-Liner, I came across this 1960 ad. There are a lot of great ads that I've spent too much time reminiscing over, but this mismatch caught my eye. Did no one coordinate the picture and text?

What's that you ask? Just the counterweight alone the size of her head? Hey, the new decade 1960 and I'm sure this liberated dame was up to the task. (cute aint she?)

It doesn't say PORTABLE, it says TRANSPORTABLE. Big difference.

"...a large...instrument with true portability."
All you have to do is get it in the back seat.

I broke out my Weight and Balance spreadsheet for this same scope and punched in some numbers. The Cave in the picture has a much longer Dec Shaft than the Horsetrail Cave, so a 35 pound counterweight would work at about 24" from the RA Shaft centerline.

The tube was fiberglass coated paper, not very heavy, the 2" Dec Shaft is heavy and also provides some counterweight, so I don't know, that might actually be the right amount of counterweight. The lady in the picture is about 5'8".

Remember the average family stationwagon automobile was larger than a small aircraft carrier in 1960.
Plus ham n eggs for breakfast, hamburgers for lunch pot roast for dinner, real butter and cream, lots of protein to build strong bones.

Note that the eyepiece is about 4 feet above her haid! ...and not a ladder in sight!

I've always wanted to put one of those cartoon bubbles with one of these ads, with the model asking herself/himself "Now what??"
