Rare night in New England! Oberwerk 15x70/03 new
      #4087 - 07/02/03 06:32 AM

I started out by carrying a scope and my 20x80 Oberwerk Deluxe outside. Right away I spotted a few things with the 20x80s and notice how easy things were. Mizar and Cor Coroli were easy, M51 was seen, M81 & M82 were easy, M3 and M13 very bright. I never even set the scope up. I went in and grabbed the 15x70 Oberwerk/2003 on loan from Kevin Busarow. They were easier to focus than the 20x80s and were mounted on a better tripod. I used the 15x70s for the rest of the night.

By 10PM, naked eye, the Little Dipper had 11 stars. 11 and 15 UMi at 5.0mag and 5.2mag were seen directly, 19 Umi at 5.5mag was seen averted. First time I’ve ever recorded seeing 19UMi. By midnight the sky was aglow overhead with Cygnus near zenith.

The new Oberwerk 15x70s proved their value for the rest of the night. Tfov measured at 4.3°

Mizar 2.3-4.0/14.4” was easy, Cor Coroli 2.9-5.5/19.4” faint but easy, M51 seen, M81 and M82 seen bright, M63 and M94 seen, M3 bright core large halo, M13 brighter overall larger core, 100Her 5.9-6.0/14.2” very easy, E2259Her 7.3-8.3/19.6” near 94Her faint but seen, E2474Lyr 6.7-8.8/16.2” easy, E2470Lyr 6.6-8.6/13.4” more difficult but seen, M71 glow, M27 large bright, M29 brite, yDel 4.5-5.5/9.6” squinting to see, M10 bright, M12 faint, M9 small, 6539 glob near M9 very faint, M16 with neb, M17 nebula, M18 o.c. brite, M24 very large mixed with brite background, M23 dense wide, M11 looks like a globular, M26 seen, 15Aql 5.5-7.0/38”, 61Oph 6.0-6.5/21” easy, I4756Oph o.c. large mixed, 6633Oph bright mixed, I4665Ser vast dense faint stars, Alya theta Ser 4.5-5.0/22” very easy.

When I realized how good a night it was I decided to try for M101. At first, I had it in the field of view of the 15x70s, but I didn’t see it. I was looking at the wrong edge of the field. I got out my charts and verified the star pattern around it and there it was. I walked away and came back to swing right to it three more times. Once I knew where it was, it stood right out. I have only seen M101 a few times in my years of viewing. This final item was not the last seen but quite early on in the evening it was the best jewel to catch.

Not long ago I made some comments about the limitations of the 15x70 Oberwerks. Kevin asked me to look at the coatings on these new 2003 model of the 15x70 Oberwerk as compared to my one-year-old model of the 15x70. Fact is with these newer 15x70s, I was able to see close to a dozen objects I never saw before with my one year old 15x70s. If 15x70s work for you, I don't think you could spend your $150 on any better than these.

Oh man I didn't need to read this. I have an older pair of 15X70 Oberwerks and I've been flirting with upgrading them for about a year. While a great deal when I bought them (and still better than the Barska's) they have a one quirk that gets to me once in a while - focus likes to shift way to easy.

But what to do with the old ones? I already have a pair at work for checking out fires. Maybe two pair at work so folks don't have to share.

I now have the same choice to make. You think Kevin would know if I slipped my old ones into the box and sent them back along with a note saying thank you! This '03 model has definitely much better coatings than mine bought in may'02

Ed,
How could you even suggest such a thing. Think of all the impressionable youngsters that frequent this form. I suspect you are just kidding .

Ron, reading your comment about what to do with the older 15 x 70 Oberwerks got me to thinking. I bet there are at least a dozen or so youngsters (defined as below age 17) that may not have the coins at the moment who would absolutely treasure (and use) a "previously owned" pair of binos or scope.

I don't know of any way at the moment to match-up previously owned (but still in good working order) astronomical equipment with deserving and budding young amateur astronomers. But I bet it would be the highlight of some youngsters introduction to viewing the heavens.

Unfortunately, the world we live in is full of unethical individuals that would see such a program as a (sleezy) way to get something for nothing. At the moment, I don't have any suggestion but perhaps Allister or some of the regulars will comment (this may not be an idea worth pursuing and my feelings won't be hurt if anyone shoots it down).

I previously had a reflector that I donated to a Boy Scout Troop but I personally knew where the scope was going and that it would be taken care of as best as such things can. I know that scope lead to many Merit Badges being earned and perhaps started some youngsters to be interested in astronomy as a hobby (or perhaps as a profession).

This is somewhat away from the original topic so I'll close by congratulating Ed on the great seeing and it makes me want to get up around 2 am to see if the humidity is low enought to go out and look up at the stars...... naw, maybe when it gets cooler .

Nick;

Your idea has merit. At the moment I don't have any groups I'm familier with or know (always a big advantage so you know your gift will be properly used) so that will put some cold water on it for now. I'm in no rush so I'll keep my eyes open for just such a chance.

Since you brought it up, I'd make a great home for an Astro-Physics Traveler. Hint!

Just had a thought. Perhaps one of the larger zoos could use a pair. Good for outreach when they have kids over so they can see the animals that don't want to get up close and personal - or kids that don't like animals that get up close and personal.

Definitely just kidding Nick. Never take advantage of those that reach out to offer to you. Quick way to lose respect.

I like your "Pay it Forward" idea.

Hi Ron, Ed,
Ron, what a super idea about the zoos. Under that Stetson lies a great mind (at least on that particular occasion ).

Maybe the idea of what to do with astro equipment that is gathering dust may spur some people to pass it on to worthy users.

Ed, thanks for starting the thread that lead to all this. Who knows, this may result in some youngster getting an opportunity to use a piece of equipment that would otherwise never have happened.

Ed, I was also planning to get up at 2am tomorrow morning and point the Taks at the stars, but guess what. Weather forecast is for rain. Darn, I was looking forward to getting up at 2 am and seeing some old friends up there. Maybe Saturday.

Hope your 4th of July is a safe and happy one gentlemen. Nick

I'll bet that Stetson is going to be awful tight after that remark!

John;

If it was a Stetson it would be. However; while a nice hat, it's not the quality of a Stetson and has plenty of give.

I do have to comb over the circular depression in my skull, or is that because of the thinning hair? I can't seem to think with all this pressure.

Actually it's proof that if you get enough monkeys in a room full of typewriters at least one will prefer a word processor.

So when you guys coming south? July just started so I imagine you're fall should be about over.

No immediate plans for the south-west just yet. One thing for sure is, it's not going to happen until you folks take down our pictures at the Post Office.
