At 7:15 AM local time, skies are clear, calm air, 0% cloud cover, and temp is 50 degrees. Forecast high is 78.

Now...NOAA is indicating partly cloudy tonight in all of the Phoenix area forecast zones. At this time, all of the NOAA satellite displays indicate that the cloud cover will increase this afternoon/evening. Clear Sky Charts for the Antenna site, Lake Pleasant, and Morristown indicate that increasing cloud cover will occur between 4PM and 6PM.
Suggest that you check these weather sites during the afternoon.
Ron- assuming that the sky remains clear, try to be at Sophie's Flat prior to sundown. That will give you a chance to scope out the terrain on your way in, and give you bearings for future observing.

If NOAA and CSC are both wrong---see you tonight!

Keeping my fingers crossed. I'll be heading to a car show after lunch and with that being outside, of course, it will be easy to keep an eye on the sky. A few wispy cirrus clouds are one thing; solid cirrostratus is another.

I'll make a final decision about 3PM or so as to whether I head out there. After all, I'll need to clean up, make the drive and do dinner at Anita's Cocina.

The cloud cover is definitely getting quite solid out there as seen from my bedroom window at about 3:30PM, so it's looking more and more like we're going to have to can it.

For me anyway, the cars will have to be the stars. (There were some nice ones: A big black 1950 Olds, a couple of 1962 Impalas, a car called an Auburn, a '49 Buick, and the usual assortment of mid-'50s-era Chevies and Ford Mustangs from the '60s.)

Maybe I'll get out the Xacto knife and some paintbrushes and work on some plastic for a while.

Bugger. Staying home. She is pretty well socked in here and it looks like it is getting thicker and coming from the west.

Ron-
That's the beauty of the site. It is a BLM trailhead, and you can use it whenever you want. No permits. No fees. AND BLM loads the pit toilet with TP. Of course, you may run into horsemen, or hikers, or ATV'ers, but it's a big site (~5 acres total) and you can move to the far west end if you want solitude. Camping IS allowed.

Ron, I was there. It was beautiful. The sky was a little crummy until 9:00 PM, then opened up for us. What a view! LBS on the bottom of Jupiter was very visible and quite clear. I never saw that one before. All I can say is I cant wait to be in some good AZ skies. My girl was picking clusters out naked eye...One man's trash is anothers treasure. Packed it up at 11:00, way to soon, but ya'll got a beautiful state here, and we are off to see more. To the Wikenburg Starjunkies: Nice place, I'm jealous, ya'll should have been there, and see you all at the Messier Marathon next month!

So it sounds like they had some decent viewing anyway Saturday night.

Well, we'll try next month, and maybe I'll even get out to the Messier Marathon!

Folks, Just a small question please. Can a small (24') travel trailer be navigated on the roads into Sophies Flat?
Steve, Lake Havasu

You should have no problem...the following includes pictures of the road.

The road follows the lay of the land which in some spots gets dicey. That said, pickups with horse trailers seem to do just fine. If your ball is fairly high and your trailer has decent clearance you should be OK. It's a short run out there so leaving the trailer in town and checking it out first would not be a bad idea.

For once, it looks like we're going to have some good weather for the stars!

Now as long as nobody buys a new telescope, we should be gold!

To quote my Weather Radio: "Partly sunny this morning, then mostly sunny this afternoon...for tonight: clear."

Looks encouraging for tonight, but we'll see. I'm planning to do lunch, then hang out in the Sun City West library for reading Sky and Telescope, then do dinner at Anita's.
