Excellent review - thanks to the author for writing and posting it.

I have recently acquired a nice LXD55 AR6 which I've started to improve but Stan's article provides lots more ideas for improvements. I'm lucky enough to have also acquired an Aries Chromacor O-1 to use with the scope which makes a significant reduction to the already acceptable levels of chromatic aberration.

I must sort out a more appropriate mount for the scope though - my current Giro-style alt-azimuth is not really up to the job - this is a heavy and long optical tube !.

Thanks again Stan for the very enjoyable and inspiring review.

Just saw this review: a beautiful scope, a great review which I consider to give full and objective information, mixed with interesting subjective feelings and appreciation of the author: many thanks. (Nice pics too).

Excellent review it is a shame that Meade has dropped the AR-6 and AR-5 refractors from production line. Does Meade have plans for these OTA's on different mounts or has the lack of sales left them to the void........

Meade Europe / Bresser are selling this kind of achros: there is a contact link to Bresser on the Explore scientific website.
Here's the catalogue:

Great review, Stan! I had an AR-6 and only gave it up when I bought a six inch f10. Otherwise, I would still own the thing. It really DOES do a nice job. The weakest link was that focuser. I added a Moonlite two speed to it, which really resulted in a scope that was a pleasure to use. Great double star scope!

John

I'm always learning something new from you, Stan. Life has temporarily gotten in the way of getting out to Crockett, and Patricia and I miss it.

Excellent review, and here's a personal testament to the quality of Stan's work. Like all his scopes, this one's a standard by which others of the same model should be measured.

Clear skies and warm(er) temps,

Terry

As the owner of an AR5 I did enjoy this review, and found it well written. Thank you!

At some point I should document the simple improvements that can be made to the stock focuser mechanism to improve the smoothness of the rack and pinion engagement.

Cheers,

Ed

Hello Stan,

Thank you for writing such a well rounded review of the Meade AR6. You are right on the money; these telescopes deliver great views if you take the time to really observe. Upgrading some of the stock items definitely adds to that experience too. Of course, you forgot to mention that your scope looks magnificent on that mount.

Regards,

Neil.

Great review; even two plus years later! I am considering purchasing a used one in addition to my 10" Dob, and was wondering what differences to expect or not. You pointed those out succinctly. Thanks.

Any updates since authoring the article?

Clear Skies,

Darryl

I bought my AR-6 used a couple of years ago. It is one of my most treasured positions. There's nothing quite like observing with a large refractor.

I have an AR-5 on an LXD-75 mount I love. The color correction id very good. I was wondering how the mount would handle the AR-6?
I have the stock focuser, I plan on cleaning the Sticky/Gummy Glue and buffing the focuser smooth, then adding strips inside to take up slop. Then relube with SuperLube.. I'll let you know if it comes out better. I'm disabled so an extra Couple hundred is off the table right now isn't possible but a bit of work and refinement should
smooth things up a bit, so will taking my Dremmel polishing kit to the Rack and Pinion on it.. I do have plenty of time and polish....

The LXD75 does a fine job with the AR-6, you just gotta pay attention to the ballance. I added a SVP pier extension from Orion that really helps to elevate the scope without having to fully extend the tripod legs. My AR-6 has a Moonlite 2-speed focuser, which is really nice, but I also have the oiginal focuser. One of these days I want to try an experiment... I want to drill and tap 2 or 4 holes to add a set of small Nylon screws to form 1 or 2 equilateral triangles with the pinion. These would serve as glides and keep the drawtube from rocking as it is racked in and out.

Fun to think about anyway.

That is what I was basically doing with the strips. The problem with Nylon screws is limited surface contact, and the heads entering the light cone. With strips you can gain more surface contact to make it smoother.
I'm trying to decide what to make them out of.
I have some Metal Copper tape I'll try first,
Man that stuff is STICKY!
I know the AR-5 is perfect! on it.
The only meade tube I have liked better is my old 102 ED
those are SWEET!

I recently acquired an AR-6 myself. I'm really enjoying using it on an Atlas mount. Thanks to Stan or the great review and some great ideas for some improvements that I can make.

Stan`s review is fine. Magnification of 300X on Jupiter is almost unbelievable. I have a Bresser 5" refractor (the focal lenght is 1200mm) and magnification of 150X on Jupiter is very high and 171X the highest I am able to use.
