Philippines Sketching from Students
      #4384982 - 02/14/11 02:17 AM Attachment (41 downloads)

We are just about complete with the first section of teachers and staff that are taking Astronomical Observing from a Biblical View. It appears we will graduate about 20 then certify a good fraction of those students to be responsible for the refractor/binocular/reference kits that we sent before our trip. Each student has taken a quick sketching lesson (most have no experience) and taught a method of observing using the 80mm refractors. All have attended several demonstrations and put together/dismantled equipment about 6 times. Toward the end of the class they start sketching. The scans that follow are two of the students and show their first or second lunar sketches. They are about average for the group.

The first one is from a staff member who is single but is raising two children who were essentially abandoned. In back of big smiles and excited observers are stories like this. This lady has a very big heart...and big enough to tend to some of my wife's needs.

Hopefully, we can post some star or DSO sketches at a later time. It's been interesting; they are learning fast. The second group of students/teachers/layleaders come in this Thursday so we start again with another group.

This next sketch is from a young teacher and staff member (could be my granddaughter). Like the others, she shows up at class, participates in exercises, and sketches with a healthy young concentration. They will progress rapidly if they keep observing.

You can tell by the notes that we encourage a full observing sheet. At the juncture of these sketches they were recording good notes. Later, they got some more hints to standardize some of the notes and information along with their sketches.

It has been a good month to give thanks.

Roland and Linda,

Great to see some of the fruits of all that time and effort.

Frank

Thanks Frank and all. Busy with a second class now. We certified 16 to use the kits and teach the course; now we have a school administrator and 4 others from quite a ways away. Sketching intro is this afternoon; we observe to night. With this group we go night and day (8 am to 9 pm except for breaks) for 3 days. Hope to finish this group Saturday with a 3rd observation period.

The lady who did the first sketch pounded on our door at 9 pm last night to get a binoculars (with a sketch pad in hand). She could not stop smiling. Two grads are attending the second class as a repeat to get more. Our next break is Sunday (in PI) so will try to get some more pictures on. The video forum has some more of the story as we did demonstrations with astro video while 30 kids mobbed us and 6 teachers sketched.
