This "Holy Grail" planetary eyepiece is often talked about, but seldom seen.
They apparently have come in many forms over the years. The 10mm f/l is most often referred to, but we know there are others out there.

Show us a picture of yours.
To your eyes, how does it compare to its closest competitors out there?
What era does your example-or examples-come from?

I can't post a pic as I borrowed one for a few months a while back. Basically it bested everything...TMB Supermonos, ZAOs. Best contrast I've ever seen and least scatter (nonexistent) I've ever encountered from any production eyepiece. Focus snap was the best I've ever experienced.

I believe these things break the 3 digit mark in costs. So likely to spend more than a grand for one if you ever were able to find one.

Here's a pic of some FLs of Bill Rose's from another thread here...his 10mm is the one I borrowed -

Your performance and sticker price comments are spot on, based on what I've read...

Bill,

More than three digits sounds about right, I know of one being auctioned and it's over $1000 with two days left.

Here's mine:

John,

I know of only two styles. I believe mine is the latter style. I believe the earlier style looks similar to my 10mm ortho - pictured below, only it would have the word "mon." where "orth." is.

Here is a pic of an even older example from @ 1930's. It is a 40mm model in brass that was featured in the CN classifieds this past July:

You mean, it bested the balls?

Did not have the balls side by side with the ZMs so can;t say for sure. But I would give up my ball for a ZM I think

LOL...you are funny! But the ball can be easily replaced.

Seriously I also asked him to lend me the ZM so I can compare directly with the ZAO-II and SM, but he didn't respond. Glad you managed to do the comparison.

Oh yeah?

When's the last time you saw a set of the Coutureball Fused Silica "Pretty in Pink" series??

You haven't.

'Cause I have the ONLY full set.

And it's NOT for sale.

Bwahahahahaha....

Nice set you have there!

I happen to have a set of four ball eps too, but these are Lowballs (:

I would be happy to give up this set to anyone who could lend me a ZM6 or ZM10 for me to conduct a series of ep. comparison testing. Seriously.

Ugh. Asian knockoffs.

You'll be hearing from Mr. Couture's attorney forthwith.

Also, expect a visit from his personal representatives, Vinnie and Guido. They supplement his legal team for out-of-court negotiations.

Ok guys, please let it go before I get the smackdown for starting this!

So in summary, no one knows if the Zeiss monocentrics perform better than the DIY singlet ball lens eyepieces.
