I teach 5th grade and as a little test relief I took my class outside to view/sketch the 1st quarter moon. They LOVED it! My attached pictures are of them doing the sketching because it seems so much more powerful and inspiring to see their young minds staring at the moon.

Awesome - I wish you had been my 5th grade teacher! Are you going to post some of the sketches?

Merlin,
Great idea (and I hear you about test relief). People forget that the Moon is available in daylight. IIRC, a light red filter helps with the contrast.
If you want to kick things up a notch, get a white light filter for your scope and/or get a volunteer to bring a solar scope to see the Sun in the hydrogen alpha wavelength.

I too like a 23a or 25 in the wrattens for daylight moon. What floored me a little one experimental afternoion was the effectiveness of my circa 97 Lumicon OIII. The moon "pops" in such a way that the reds look like everything is beaten down with the wrattens while the OIII provides a seperation of value thats a little uncanny. It's a wonky filter. On terrestrial subjects it gives everything a kodachrome shade thats even nostagic of old slide shows. Oh hell, Im dating myself.
Give the OIII on the next daylight lunar thing. At anyrate, I enjoyed your post and pic s.
Pete
