Since I've had my scope I've never viewed the sun with it,even though I do have a solar filter(covers the OTA glass) with it,been hesitant to use it,am I just a chicken? Would love to see any sunspots or flares,I think I'm a big chicken,I am envious of those who have seen the sun through their scopes

Get out there .... leaver the finderscope capped or remove it; then - with the objective filter checked for cracks & splits and secured in place - you'll be pretty safe. Wear suitable clothing to protect you from the sun and apply sun screen to exposed flesh; the major health hazard to solar observing is sunburn!

I'd have to say that the major hazard with all of this modern equipment is bankruptcy and divorce...

Maybe, but I must say that, though I've been sunburned more times than is desirable, I've managed to avoid both bankruptcy and divorce so far ... perhaps I'm just lucky

Bert,

Go for it. You'll get a good view of sunspot groups in white light with your glass filter, but just want to be sure you know you won't see flares and proms unless you have a setup for H alpha.

As Brian mentioned, don't forget to cap your finderscope!

Read the avdice on how to do it safely, tape the filternon so there is no risk of it falling off and go for it. As with many things, have healthy respect and understand the risks and plan round them. Don't do anything that you are not comfortable with. I have a friend who turned down the offer of a look through my hydrogen alpha scope..... His loss!

Cheers

PEterW
