Ben2112 go get em! We have a rain shower coming through so maybe it will clear after that. My daughter is down visiting from Dallas and we planned to do some observing tonight. Doesn't look real promising plus we wanted to watch for some Perseids...

I am out and tracking is really good. Used SkyAlign. Man, the humidity is nasty. Just sitting here veiwing and the sweat is dripping off of me. Glasses keep fogging up.

Just packing it in. Clearest skies in a long time nice milky way. Temps are now at 58F and the dew is just starting to make an appearance. Scope was tracking great and gotos were dead on. Ah! life is good.
Good night

Just packed it in. Viewed M31 and M8 for a little while. Saw 4 meteors. All in all, it was a good night of being under the stars. Just the humidity was thick.

Had a decent night, Some wispy high clouds but I was not deterred. Got to see Neptune and Uranus. Went to M31 and M13 for some deep sky viewing. Did some imaging of M31 not sure what I got. Will post later.

Well I improved a bit on my capture of M101 last night from previous attempts.Tel has given me a lot of advice on CS2 and I have improved a little this is M101 50 lights 10 Darks X 30 sec. @ ISO 800 using my 5i and Canon 1100D DSS and PS CS2. Still have to put the time in mastering processing but as long as I can see a bit of improvement on past work it will keep me going.
Looks like tonight's going to be a repeat of last night here so I think I'll work on some clusters and see if my work will improve.
Be Well
Grey

Here in the Ohio Valley I just could not get a really sharp focus despite seeing lots of stars.Tried both scope and binos.Too much haze at my location.

08/11/13 I wanted to do some work on star clusters last night. I gave M052 in Cass. a try. I took 5 lights@30sec and 2darks stacked in DSS and processed in PS cs2. using my 5i with 6.3 FR_FF and 1100D (unmodified) I liked the result, then I noticed a small rainbow in the upper right corner. I think I might have just barely caught the Bubble NGC 7635 and it's central star SAO20575 But since I don't own the proper filters and the camera is not modded I'm not sure. The first shot is the original the second is just a blow up of the area that may be the Bubble. let me know what you think.

Hi Grey,

Yes, that is "The Bubble" ! It forms a triangle with that bright star, (upper right), and the star which looks somewhat like Thor's or Mercury's winged helmet, (bottom right) on your image.

Best regards,
Tel

Hi Tel
Thanks, once again, I didn't expect to be able to see any color in an emission nebula with my setup. I was just attempting the scorpion cluster and that dab of color made me do a little more research. I read that if I expected any detail a 16" scope would be needed so just catching a bit of a colored arc was encouraging.

Hi Grey,

You should certainly see colour in the image; (even though it's an emission nebula); if you're using your T3 DSLR.

I don't know about any need for a 16"'scope, but here's an example of "The Bubble" I took back in 2010 with my cheapo, ("Phenix" *), 4" f/5.9 achromatic refractor, unguided, on my Skywatcher GEM, using my unmodified Canon Eos 350 D.

Best regards,
Tel

* Presumably "Phenix" is the Chinese spelling for "Phoenix" ?

I have no images to share from my night out tonight, but I do have some good lessons I learned as a newbie that I thought may be worth documenting to prevent people from making the same mistakes I did!

1. When you set up a SSAG guiding system, do not assume that you should insert the Starshoot camera completely into the guiding scope. Use the parfocal ring to get it in the sweet spot. Failure to do so will result in you being perplexed why you do not see any stars in PHD! (Note: The Mini-Magnificent Auto Guiding system, or anything that uses the Starshoot camera is quite strong enough to pick up things like portions of the Double Cluster, and M31 in its field of view...)

2. When you program PEC on a deck or other ground-like bases, be sure not to walk around on it like it is a football field. Disturbance will lead to very strange mount behavior, of which I believe I will need to do a factory reset because of?

3. If you do not have an Auto-focusing system or other such fancy devices to make focusing less of a labor - invest in either a home made Bahtinov Mask, or buy a pre-made one. Focusing by eye is not only sub-par, but can consume your entire imaging experience if you are as diligent as I am about it.

-Bill

Well.. I woke up around 4ish this morning.. Went to work with the binos and viewed Jupiter this morning. As others started driving in, they thought I was nuts. I viewed Jupiter until it started getting brighter outside. Then off to my desk I went. If the weather holds out, the very early morning skies should be clear Sunday morning.

Hope some of you have some clear skies, kinda mixed at my location at the moment. If it doesn't clear up I'll have to pass tonight. I had wanted to try for some nice doubles tonight but too cloudy at the moment...
