Suggestions for mount head for WO66
      #4423124 - 03/03/11 07:05 AM

What would be a good mount head for mounting my little WO66?
I have a good camera mount, but I want it to be able to point to the zenith. I have a good tripod. Looking at a Stellarvue M1 or M2.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think that stability is the most important thing in photography. You should be looking at the AP3600 or the Losmandy Titan at a minimum.

Good luck,
GN

A mount with 100lb capacity for a 66mm scope? Definately wouldn't be undermounted...
The M1 is a nice smooth mount.

Some camera tripod heads allow you to get to the zenith if you use the head backwards - in other words with the pan/tilt handle in front of the scope. Clumsy but you get used to it.

Your WO 66 is nice and light so a good camera tripod might do it well. To get something more substantial that would allow you to upgrade scopes to 80 or 90mm, take a look at Desert Sky Astro and their DSV-1. I have been very happy with it for several years for my WO 80FD. The head can be adapted to HD carmera tripods if you already have one.

Lots of choices out there so do your homework.

Any alt/az setup with a panning handle for the 66mm will do. My favorite is the UA Unistar light.

I recommend using a extra long universal dovetail bar to help balance the heavy rear forward.

Synta AZ-4. A camera tripod is one of the _worst_ mounts for a telescope.

Well really if you put it on a Losmandy Titan or AP1200 you won't need vibration damping pads. Greg N

This and a sturdy tripod work well.

The 128Lp is beefy enough to support the scope, but not too heavy. I use one with my AT 72ED and it works great. The head is not too expensive, either.

I would recommend one of the various EQ-1's. You'd have the advantage of a real astronomical mount, and they are almost as light as a decent camera mount. With some, you can get a small battery drive also. I have a Celestron branded one, with a 9v battery powered drive. Very light, very easy to handle.

If you prefer to stick to photo equipment, I would recommend a Manfrotto 410 gear head which is quite stable with my WO Zenith 80FD on it. The manfrotto 410 gear head has both quick positioning and slow motion on 3 axes and can reach zenith with no problem.

I ditto the Desert Sky mount, I have one for my WO66. BUT, get the long dovetail, not the stock one. You will need it if you have a 2" star diagonal and something like a Panoptic.
