FYI,

I just talked with a tech rep today at Celestron who stated that the CG-5 max load weight is 35 pounds. Neither the owner's manual or the web site have this information.

That sounds pretty optimistic. What is the max weight you have used on your CG-5 (ASGT) mounts and how did the mount perform?

What do you want to do with it? For visual use the C11 is the limit...for imaging, a C8.

Thanks Stan - it's great to have a link that shows all the weights.

Sadly, that should also be in the manual and under the "specs" for each mount.

Hi Rod!

Nothing special. I just couldn't find the info in the manual or under the specs of the mount so I called Celestron and wanted to share it with the rest of the CN crew. I do have some ATM projects that I'll probably test on the mount but they will all be under 22 pounds.

I've owned my ASGT mount for quite a few years and it has served me well. But I've never put 35 pounds on it!

What is the "reality" load limit that owners of ASGT mounts have discovered over the years?

I have used a C9.25 on my ASGT. But at high mags it seemed a bit touchy. My SV 115T20 is a better match. I have not used it for imaging.

Right around 20lbs in my opinion. Under that it is nice and steady, over that it starts getting jittery.
But, and it's a big but (no pun intended), the length of the scope on it plays a big part in my rating. A short tube that is heavier than 20lbs works better on it than a long tube near or at 20lbs.
Hence Uncle Rod saying a C11, at about 28lbs, will work visually, but I can tell you from personal experience that a fully equipped C6R at approx 22lbs does not work very well.

I put a 30lb refractor on mine and it gets the shakes at times but it's still usable visually.

I use my ASGT for long exposure and it performs perfectly at 10kgs total weight (SC6+Equinox 80 side be side+capture gear and accessories)I think it's around 24-25 lbs.I wouldn't load it more than that for photography.

I tried imaging with a 9.25, 80MM and all the cameras and mounting gear. Even balanced, a slight wind caused the OTA to move and it almost hit the mount but that was 40 pounds.
For long term DSO images, I would say a smaller scope than a C8, maybe a 100ED. Using video cameras, a C8 is probably fine.

For visual a 9.25 is what I would consider the limit, even that your kind of pushing it. Any wind played havoc with the mount.

I think 35lbs is pretty good estimate of MAXIMUN weight. 20-25 Lbs is about perfect for that mount.

When I first got my C11, I mounted it on the ASGT(5)a few times. Gotos were spot on and I even binoviewed at 292X. No problem for visual...but I'm not fussy. Vibrations dampended in 2-3 seconds. Fine for this scope/load/moment arm. It used to be clearly spec'd by C for 35 lbs. I guess it has been removed.

I could take 60 seconded unguided subs with a CG-5 mount and a Meade 10" SCT. Doable? Yes. Optimal? No way. It did work just fine for visual though.
