Frustrating night
It isn't often I can't find my target to image. but last night was an exception Spanked myself for 45 minutes and still remained lost in space. I was using my mono SS III CCD with the Luminous filter amd william optics 66mm APO
After I did a 2 star alignment to the West sky I followed that with a calibration star and then out of alignment. I did a goto to M42 to test the goto accuracy and M42 ended up in the cross hair.
I then did a goto to NGC 2359 and the mount turned to the East I then powered down the mount checked the transit time of NGC 2359 and found It was at 20:41 and it was only 20:20 I wanted to start the session West of the Meridian..
I had a few minute so I calibrated the PHD guide system
At around 20:45 I redid the 2 star alignment to the West with a single calibration star. I did a goto to M42 It was centered And then a SYNC to Sirius somewhat near Thor's Helmet (NGC 2359) Then a goto to NGC 2359. I tried a 3 minute sub and then a 5 minute sub and got no Helmet.
Packed up and went in defeated...
The only thing I can think of was that the atmosphere was particulate or moisture filled

Hi Greg,
I have a hard enough time seeing it in my 140. Were you imaging with your 80 and guiding with the 66 ?
It is a pretty deep object and takes mutiple 10 minute subs to get much in the TEC 140.
Don't give up, insure your goto accuracy and give it lots more time. It will still be pretty small in the FOV of the 80, forget the 66.

Hi Brad
I was guiding with a 135mm lens and imaging with the 66mm
It is only a mag of 11.5 but I have captured it before
with my OSC
The link below is some work I did 2 years ago with my OSC SS Pro 3 min x 30
I might try to overlay my test shot with this one and see if the star patterns make sense LOL

Good capture Greg. What is the focal length on the WO 66 ? Looks about like my 550mm WO 80mm FD in size perspective. I'm pretty sure my AT65EDQ would present a smaller image of the helmet itself. Brad

Hi Brad
It's 388mm My Celestron ED80 is 600mm The would have been a better choice or the 6 inch SCT with .63 reducer
but I'm happy with the results.
Thanks
Greg
