Pier mounted my Takahashi EM-400
      #4454268 - 03/16/11 06:03 PM

Hi,

weather finally allowed me to beef up my existing pier to accept my new (to me) EM-400. I had an adapter made at emachineshop and secured it with 4 ends of stainless 1/2" threaded rod. It wasn't a big deal.

http://www.carpephoton.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=26

You don't remember but I received some criticism on the state of my previous pier when I first reported on it. Concrete wasn't the right type and all that. Too dry and crumbly. Well I can tell you that while the pier wasn't particularly pretty it was super duper strong. I tried to chisel part of it away before enforcing it and had a hard time taking of chips. Concrete really is quite amazing material. Incredibly cheap (talking about hand mixing bags from your home store, delivery I'm sure is more $$) and much much stronger than what we need for mounting a few hundred (if we're lucky) pounds of astro gear.

Anyway. I may leave the tube around the concrete so no one can tell me it doesn't look right this time

Sander

Hey Sander...really nice execution! That's going to be a solid setup.

Hi Sander,

That looks like a great pier. How's the progress?

I am thinking of buying an EM500 and making a pier for it. Do you know if the adaptor for yours fits a EM500?

Best of luck to your project.

Alfred

Hi Alfred,

the progress is that my mount is on the pier and it works great! In about a week I'm mounting my new Edge HD11 and then we'll see what this setup can really do.

Sorry, I don't know about the EM-500. My adapter is made for this part: http://www.landseaskyco.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=0&products_id=1454 which is listed specifically for the EM-400. You could ask Takahashi if it fits the EM-500. I'm afraid it won't.

Thanks Sander. I must say that there is almost next to nil literature (manual) on EM-500 and its accessories like pier adaptor etc. Wonder why non-Japanese people are still buying this product.

Hi Sander

Don't mind me asking price wise what did that piece cost you? I'm woring on getting my ideas for a Atlas mount and this has perked my interest. Nice looking little (yea right) setup.

Hi Kenny,

it was less than $200 not counting the time it took me to design it.

Probably because it's a very good mount.

Thanks Frank, I'm proud of it! Also glad I got it approved by the War Department in about 30 seconds. It probably helped we just stuck an $80K kitchen in the house

the old pier was 8" above ground. Bigger below but I didn't measure it with any accuracy.

One more question if you don't mind Sander? How did you come up with using a 1/2" plate as to say going 3/4" or even 1"? That's a good size mount and weight let alone when everything gets added.

I'm working on a bottom plate idea for my Atlas but "if" I get a bigger mount I just want to be sure it's covered. man that mount really looks good though.

No real reason other than cost. At some point there's no benefit in making things stronger and when you look at the design you see the 4 corner bolts are really close to the central ring. That means that any force applied (it's minimal anyway) has a short arm which results in little torque. I think you underestimate the rigidity of 1/2" aluminum

In any case, you can put the mount on the central mounting disk and it will stay put securing any of the set screws. That indicates balance and hence only force downward and not sideways.
