Now we are in Holidays, so I decided to try again and post my impressions of its optics. I’ve been interested in some sort of imaging system and looked first for the Pecten Eye cam, made specifically for this binos, but after some emails, I found that its cost is higher than a Fluorite Kowa, so I dropped the idea immediately. First I tried to attach a High resolution (2mpx) web cam, but it didn´t work well (and resulted in a waste of money). On Wednesday I found a camera shop that had a Celestron camera adapter for up to 2” eps, and curiosity got me and went for it. Now I needed a small digital camera. Two blocks from there I found a nice Sony, and it turned out to be 14.1 mpx, full HD, panoramic photos, very nice!, etc…. many times better than the Pecten specs, and many times cheaper. I had to do an “elevator” for the adapter; the camera lens was still too low at its highest position. Night shots have been impossible due to very bad weather (my future target is Saturn), but today’s morning allowed me some clearer day shots of the small town “La Calera”, 6km from my house (Google Earth). Cold weather resulted positive since it almost eliminated heat waves from the images. The objective of this post is to share with all of you the setup, and the excellent color correction of this binoculars and its sharp image to the edge, so I took the photographs without any zoom, to capture the edge. I found, with a more rigorous observation, that purple fringing as in an achromatic system is seen due to misplacing of the eyes, which is easier due to the medium sized exit pupil (3.75mm). Centering eyes completely steady is not easy, but with the very steady camera/adapter setup you can see that color on dark objects against a white sky does not appear evident. Please imagine these images as seen through a 68 deg AFOV. Not as good as the original pictures due resizing, but they show the point. It was fun to watch in my TV real time video of town people and cars activity! I tried zooming in but the image degraded too much so it didn't work either. I think it can be done by zooming in a very good/clear/focused High res image, but in real time I don't know. The shots remind me of several I posted over on the Cloudy Days forum about two years ago . I just use a relatively simple / humble point and shoot Panasonic Lumix camera through my TeleVue 76 with TeleVue 32mm Plossl eyepiece , or occasionally with 18mm TeleVue Radian , which at least offers a wider A.F.O.V of around 60 degrees compared with the T.V Plossl . I thought how great it must be to have such a great instrument, and then I saw that you had another one just there on the floor! I was intrigued by your statement that it was "too cold to go outside". I see though that La Calera is quite high up in the mountains, but that your forecast is high 18C, low 8C, which is pretty warm. When our temperature gets UP to 8C, we normally switch from long sleeve shirts to short sleeves! The telephone pole shot is impressively free from color fringing, even more so considering the magnification. Now, please tell us the poles were really that curved, and we're not just seeing excessive pincushion! Quite a significant jump. I did notice the edge differences in the two pics out of the 40x - looks like the first pic is more representative of actual edge correction, while the second pic appears to have maybe been a slight off axis positioning maybe (the slightly hazy appearance)? Talking about the 40x only here. Setting up the camera is not easy because the camera focus and tries to correct the image by itself, so my main indicator was just to see most of the edge as a not defocused line. Setting up the 25x is easier due the bigger exit pupil; more positioning space. Also, for the camera, the image changes automatically from landscape to macro when it detects the proximity of the glass of the EP. I own the mighty 6x30 FMTR-SX, almost as rare as the 40x ED. I am still willing to swap, any time. You don't know what you're missing. Your windows are awesome, too. Why go outside?
