Last night I was looking at Saturn with the 15-inch, when i decided to try a look at NGC-3242, the Ghost of Jupiter. In fact, this planetary nebula looks much more like an eyeball looking back, and the Eye Nebula seems to be a more appropriate name. I found the seeing to be quite steady so I bumped the magnification up to 400X. I was most surprised to see the central star, which was never seen through my smaller telescopes and the eye like appearance even stronger than through my smaller telescopes as well. The outer shell was fainter along the ends than the middle portion, the inner shell was more prominent and the central star was dead center in the the nebula. What was surprising was the fact that all of this detail was seen from the driveway with a streetlight right across the street from me and I used no nebula filter either.

Taras,
Excellent detail in your sketch of the ghost. It does look different as you get above 12" aperture.

Beautiful! I just glimpsed the annular structure two nights ago, plus the two star like points on either side of it. This is a very nice planetary, and almost too bright to observe!

Wonderful sketch! Unfortunately, this interesting object is very low in the soup from my location, even when near the meridian. It doesn't help that I have a large grain elevator a stone's throw directly to the south from my backyard...

You've captured a stunning amount of detail in this planetary - many thanks for sharing your excellent sketch. That you were able to achieve such despite the local glare is a testament to your observing skills. I like how you've rendered the shading.

Taras,
An excellent observation and report on the Ghost of Jupiter (NGC 3242), one of my favorite planetary nebula to study. I agree with you that the core of the nebula gives the impression of an "eyeball looking back" at the observer. I have posted an observation of mine of the Ghost of Jupiter made on February 19, 2009 (05:15 U.T.) using my 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain (155x/344x). The magnified image shows the "eye" as well. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
