I went to my favourite observing site (30 minutes drive) and made a sketch of one of the highlights of spring: the Whale Galaxy and its compagnion NGC 4627. 4631 Was pretty bright through my 12" f/4 dob at 150x. The shape was very typical and a few foreground stars were visible. 4627 Could be seen, although much fainter and smaller than 4631. The orientation was difficult to see. NGC 4631 is one of my favorite deep sky targets. I first encountered this fine galaxy many years back with my 6-inch refractor beneath good skies. It presents a wealth of detail if one patiently enjoys the view, plus is a surprisingly large and bright galaxy. It seems an easier galaxy to catch than many of the Messiers. You've captured the shape and the brightening around the core wonderfully. I was just thinking the other night as I made a late April and May target list up that IF the weather clears up before I go back to work in a week that I would like to capture NGC 4631 and then NGC 4631 and NGC 4656 The Hockey stick in a widefield sketch as seen here in that image.
